NARRATIVE WRITING
Narrative writing tells a story, incorporating characters, a plot, a setting, and a conflict. The goal is to
engage the reader through a compelling and imaginative tale. O level students are expected to
demonstrate creativity, organization, and a strong command of language.
Structure of a Narrative
01- Introduction
Hook: Start with an engaging opening that grabs the reader's attention.
Setting: Introduce the time and place of the story.
Characters: Introduce the main characters and their motivations.
02- Rising Action
Build tension by introducing a conflict or challenge that the characters face.
Develop the story through a series of events that lead to the climax.
03- Climax
The turning point of the story where the main conflict reaches its peak.
This is often the most exciting part of the narrative.
04- Falling Action
After the climax, the story begins to wind down.
Characters deal with the aftermath of the climax, and loose ends are tied up.
05- Conclusion
Resolve the conflict and provide closure to the story.
Reflect on the events and their significance to the characters.
Tips for Effective Narrative Writing
Show, Don’t Tell:
Use descriptive language to create vivid images. Instead of saying "Emily was sad," describe her actions
and feelings.
Use Dialogue:
Incorporate conversations between characters to make the story more dynamic and engaging.
Develop Characters:
Give characters distinct traits and motivations to make them relatable.
Create Tension:
Build suspense through challenges and conflicts, keeping the reader engaged.
Edit and Revise:
After writing, revisit your narrative to refine language, check for clarity, and correct any errors.
Sample Narrative
Title: The Mysterious Stranger
Introduction:
It was a foggy evening in October when Emily first noticed the stranger standing at the edge of the park.
His silhouette loomed against the dim light of the streetlamp, and an inexplicable feeling tugged at her
heart. Who was he, and why was he here?
Rising Action:
As days turned into weeks, Emily found herself returning to the park, drawn by an invisible thread. Each
time, the stranger was there, his eyes hidden beneath the brim of his hat. Curiosity gnawed at her, and
she began to watch him from a distance, wondering about his story. One evening, she gathered her
courage and approached him.
“Why do you come here every day?” she asked, her voice trembling.
He looked up, revealing a weathered face and kind eyes. “I come to remember,” he replied softly.
Climax:
Intrigued, Emily pressed for more. The stranger shared tales of his past—adventures across the world,
love lost, and dreams unfulfilled. Each story painted a vivid picture, and as he spoke, Emily felt a
connection growing between them. But just as she began to feel comfortable, he whispered, “I must
leave soon.”
Falling Action:
The news hit her hard. She felt a mixture of sadness and urgency. “Why do you have to go?” she
pleaded. The stranger paused, a sorrowful look crossing his face. “I have fulfilled my promise to the
memories, and it is time for me to move on.”
Conclusion:
The following day, Emily returned to the park, but the stranger was gone. The fog had lifted, revealing a
clear blue sky. Though she felt a profound loss, she also felt gratitude for the stories he had shared. In
his absence, she realized that life is a tapestry of moments, and sometimes, strangers come into our
lives to teach us valuable lessons before moving on.
