2.1 FRAMEWORK OF E-COMMERCE

Framework of e-commerce is a structured blueprint that outlines the

layers and components essential for the development, deployment and management
of e-commerce system.

2.1.1 Application Services

This layer comprises of existing and future applications

Three distinct classes of e-commerce applications are:

 Consumer to Business
 Business to Consumer

 Intra organization

2.1.2 Brokerage and Data Management

 This layer provides service integration through information brokerages.
 Information brokerages represents an intermediary who provides service
integration between customers and information providers.

 An important aspect of the brokerage function is the support for data

management.

2.1.3 Interface and Support Services

 This layer provides interfaces for ecommerce applications such as interactive

catalogs and functions necessary for information search via directories.
 Interactive catalogs are customized interface to customer applications like home
shopping.

 Directories organize enormous amount of information and transactions generated

to facilitate e-commerce.

2.1.4 Secure Messaging

 E-messaging is a critical business issue.

 Messaging is the software that sites between the network infrastructure and the
clients or e-commerce applications.

 Messaging services offers solutions for communicating unstructured data, reports

as well as structured data such as purchase orders, shipping notices, etc.

2.1.5 Middleware Services

 With the growth of networks, client-server technology and all other forms of
communicating between or among different platforms, the problems, of getting all
the pieces to work together grew.
 Users demanded interaction between dissimilar systems, networks that permitted
shared resources and applications that could be accessed by multiple software
programs.

 Middleware is the ultimate mediator between software programs that enables

them to communicate with one another.

2.1.6 Network Infrastructure

 Also known as the “Information Superhighway”, network infrastructure is the

foundation layer of hardware infrastructure.
Unit-1: Introduction [3]

 It is a mixture of many forms of information transport systems, which include

telecom, cable TV, wireless and the Internet.

 These systems, in particular the Internet, provide various types of

telecommunication channels for transmission of contents used in ecommerce.

2.2 FIREWALLS & NETWORK SECURITY

2.2.1 Firewall Introduction
A firewall is a network security device, either hardware or software-
based, which monitors all incoming and outgoing traffic and based on a defined set
of security rules acc epts, rejects, or drops that specific traffic.
 Accept: allow the traffic
 Reject: block the traffic but reply with an “unreachable error”
 Drop: block the traffic with no reply

A firewall is a type of network security device that filters incoming and

outgoing network traffic with security policies that have previously been set up
inside an organization. A firewall is essentially the wall that separates a private
internal network from the open Internet at its very basic level.

2.2.2 Network Security

The most basic example of Network Security is password protection

which the user of the network chooses. In recent times, Network Security has
become the central topic of cyber security with many organizations inviting
applications from people who have skills in this area.
Definition of Network Security
1) Any action intended to safeguard the integrity and usefulness of your data
and network is known as network security.
In other words, 2) Network security is defined as the activity created to protect
the integrity of your network and data.
Network security is the practice of protecting a computer network from
unauthorized access, misuse, or attacks. It involves using tools, technologies, and
policies to ensure that data traveling over the network is safe and secure, keeping
sensitive information away from hackers and other threats.

In today’s world, we transfer the data in bulk, and the security of this data is
very important, so Internet security provides that feature i.e., protection of data.
There are different types of protocol exist like routing, mail transfer, and remote
communication protocol. But the Internet security protocol helps in the security
and integrity of data over the internet.

2.3.1 TCP / IP

It stands for Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol, which

are the core protocols of the Internet. This model defines how data is transmitted
over networks, ensuring reliable communication between devices. It consists of
four layers: the Link Layer, the Internet Layer, the Transport Layer, and the
Application Layer. Each layer has specific functions that help to manage different
aspects of network communication.
Unit-1: Introduction [5]

TCP/IP was designed and developed by the Department of Defense (DoD)

in the 1960s and is based on standard protocols.

2.3.2 HTTP

2.3.3 S-HTTP

2.3.4 SMTP

2.3.5 SSL

Network Security involves comprehensive measures that go beyond basic password protection. It includes a range of tools, technologies, and policies designed to protect network integrity and data security from unauthorized access, misuse, or attacks. This involves implementing Internet security protocols that secure data integrity over the Internet, such as TCP/IP, which manages data transmission and communication reliability. These protocols provide a structured approach to managing network communication, ensuring secure data transfer by handling routing, mail transfer, and remote communication .

TCP/IP ensures reliable data transmission by utilizing its four-layer architecture consisting of the Link Layer, the Internet Layer, the Transport Layer, and the Application Layer. Each layer performs specific functions that contribute to the overall reliability of data communication. The Link Layer handles the physical network interface and data link management. The Internet Layer manages data packet routing across the network. The Transport Layer ensures accurate data delivery through protocols like TCP that provide error checking and correction. The Application Layer enables end-user interaction with the data, facilitating reliable communication between devices by managing applications that use network services .

Cryptography is pivotal in secure messaging within e-commerce systems as it ensures that communications remain confidential, authenticated, and unaltered. Encryption transforms readable data into a coded form that can only be deciphered by authorized parties, protecting information from eavesdropping. Digital signatures provide a means of verifying the authenticity and integrity of a message, ensuring that the data is truly from the purported sender and has not been tampered with during transmission. These mechanisms collectively bolster the security of sensitive transactions by maintaining confidentiality and forging trust between communicating parties .

The network infrastructure is strategically important in an e-commerce system as it forms the foundation for robust online transactions. It provides the necessary hardware and transport systems, including telecom, cable TV, wireless, and the Internet, ensuring the efficient transmission of data. By supporting various telecommunication channels, network infrastructure facilitates reliable content delivery and transaction processing, critical for maintaining service quality and customer satisfaction in e-commerce operations. The Internet, as a key component, also provides global connectivity, enabling broader market reach and facilitating cross-border commerce .

Firewalls are critical for network security as they monitor all incoming and outgoing traffic, filtering it based on predefined security rules. These rules determine whether data packets are accepted, rejected with a reply, or dropped without response. By serving as a barrier between a private internal network and the open Internet, firewalls protect against unauthorized access and hacking. Their functionalities include ensuring that only authorized traffic is allowed, thereby preventing potential threats from accessing sensitive information within the organization .

Interface and support services significantly enhance the user experience in e-commerce platforms by offering functionalities like interactive catalogs and directories. Interactive catalogs provide a customized user interface that simplifies product exploration and selection, mirroring in-store experiences in a digital format. Directories organize large volumes of data and transactions, making it easier for users to search and navigate the platform efficiently. These services improve accessibility and engagement, leading to a more satisfying user experience and increasing the likelihood of successful transactions .

The framework of e-commerce comprises several layers: Application Services, Brokerage and Data Management, Interface and Support Services, Secure Messaging, Middleware Services, and Network Infrastructure. Application Services include Consumer to Business, Business to Consumer, and Intra-organization applications, which serve as the primary interfaces with the end users. Brokerage and Data Management enable service integration and data brokerage functions. Interface and Support Services provide tools like interactive catalogs and directories for organizing information. Secure Messaging facilitates communication of both unstructured and structured data. Middleware Services act as intermediaries between software programs, enabling interaction across diverse platforms. Finally, Network Infrastructure forms the foundational layer by offering hardware transport systems like telecom and the Internet to support content transmission .

Secure messaging services act as a critical communication bridge between the network infrastructure and e-commerce applications. They facilitate the exchange of both unstructured and structured data types, essential for operational transactions like purchase orders and shipping notices. This bridging ensures that messages are securely transmitted and received, maintaining data integrity and confidentiality. Such reliable communication is critical for the effective operation of online businesses, as it ensures that transaction-related information is protected from interception and unauthorized access, thereby securing the business process and customer data .

Implementing network security protocols entails challenges such as ensuring comprehensive coverage against a wide range of potential threats while maintaining performance and usability. Key considerations in choosing appropriate protocols include their effectiveness in protecting data integrity, the level of encryption they provide, compatibility with existing systems, and the ability to integrate seamlessly with network operations. Additionally, protocols must be flexible to adapt to evolving security threats and regulatory compliance requirements, providing robust protection without imposing excessive overhead on network resources .

Middleware services play a crucial role in e-commerce by acting as intermediaries that enable communication and interaction across different software applications and platforms. They address the complexities of integrating disparate systems, supporting interoperability and resource sharing among various networks. Middleware provides a transparent interface that connects software components otherwise unable to communicate directly, facilitating smoother system integration. This capability is vital for managing e-commerce operations that require seamless data exchange and coordinated functionalities across diverse environments .
