Lesson 3

We’re down to the last few steps required to confirm the niche of your
website for this course.

Before we do that, I want to clarify answers to some questions you

might have at this stage:

1. The goal of this course is to walk you through building a

successful Amazon affiliate marketing site.

2. You can use an existing site for this course or you can choose
to build a new one.

3. I will walk you through how and when to apply to the Amazon
Associates program if you are not already an Amazon
affiliate.

4. Amazon has a different affiliate program for each of their

country websites. That means that the [Link]
Associates program is different from the [Link]
Associates program which is different from the [Link]
program, etc. This strategy will work with any of those sites but
the audience size, payment plan, and volume of available
products is different for each. You do not have to promote
the Amazon site related to the country where you live. Those
who live in other countries CAN promote the [Link]
program. It just means your audience is those in the US
because that is the audience that would mostly buy from
[Link]. It is one of the largest audiences (meaning
there’s greater potential traffic but also more competition) so
many affiliates choose to promote that program.

 5. Some students want to promote an affiliate network other
than Amazon during this course. That’s fine! I suggest those
students make sure there are enough products related to your
niche on such networks before finalizing your niche choice. I
will be sharing some HTML code along the way that works with
Amazon affiliate links. If you need help converting that code
so it works with a different affiliate network just let me know
when we reach that point.

6. I have mentioned that being able to share your own images

on your website can help your site do better in Google. These
images DO NOT have to be of the products you’re promoting.
They simply have to be unique and related in some way. As
an example, suppose I decide to go with the solar lights or
solar flowers niche and I do a post called “5 Ways to Use Solar
Lights by Your Pool” and I choose to promote 5 solar lights from
Amazon that I don’t own. I have a pool so I could take a
picture of my pool to use in my post – the picture could be of
the pool without solar lights. The image would be unique (it’s
mine, I took the picture, no one else will have this picture of
my pool online anywhere) and it would be related (it shows a
pool which is related to the topic of the post). That’s what I
mean about being able to use at least some of your own
images in your site.

7. Each student will use a unique mix of post types that plays to
their own skill set in order to reach their financial target. I might
have more product review kinds of posts than short posts and
you might have a mix of short posts, how-to posts, and longer
product posts but no review posts. That’s okay! You must
leverage your own strengths!! You DO NOT have to write
product reviews if you do not want to or don’t like to write
product reviews. However, if you do not want to include
product reviews in your site strategy you should focus on items

 that people buy without first doing lots of research on the
product. For example, don’t choose “vacuum cleaners” as
your niche if you’re not going to write product reviews
because people prefer to research vacuums by reading
detailed reviews before they buy.

8. We are currently working on choosing the topic (niche) of our

websites so we will know what to write about once we build
our site.

Confirming Your Niche Choice

You need to walk through a few final steps to check that your niche
has the potential to get you to $1000/month.

Whether or not your niche can make $1000/month is - at a very high

level - a function of several things:

1. Level of consumer interest in the niche

2. Level of competition in the niche

3. The degree to which you can create unique content for the
niche

Level of Consumer Interest

We stand a better chance of making sales if we are promoting
products where there’s a high degree of consumer interest.

If you wanted to build your site around “cat collar cameras” you might
find that there aren’t as many sales of those kinds of products as there
are for something like license plate frames.

We can determine the level of interest for a niche by checking three

things:

1. Number of references on the web

2. Volume of products on Amazon
3. Average reviews for the top products on Amazon

Number of References on the Web

To check how many references there are for your niche in Google do
the following:

1. Bring up Google

 2. Do a search for one of the kinds of products you found in your
Lesson #1 research and are thinking you’d include on your site
but put the phrase IN QUOTES and then look at the number of
results shown by Google:

3. You want your niche idea to have a total of at least 1,000,000

results for all the kinds of products you came up with to
promote for that niche. That means if you came up with 5
kinds of products you could promote for your niche you’d do
the above search for all 5 products and add the numbers
together. If the total is more than 1,000,000 than you can
leave that niche idea on your list.
4. Repeat steps #1-3 for any other niche ideas still on your list

Volume of Products on Amazon

The next thing we want to check is the volume of available products
on Amazon.

If we choose a niche where there are only a handful of related

products on Amazon we’re going to quickly run out of products to
promote.

You need to do this research on the Amazon site you intend to
promote.

If you plan on joining the [Link] affiliate program instead of

the [Link] program then you should do this research on the
[Link] site.

To check the volume of products on Amazon:

1. Go to Amazon
2. Search for one of the products you found to promote related
to your niche:

3. Scroll to the bottom of the first page of results and click to go

to the next page, scan those results and then go to the next
page – do this for at least 5 pages:

 4. Sometimes Amazon will start showing products that are only
semi-related to your search if there aren’t enough products
that actually match so pay attention to the results on each
page – you want to see at least 5 pages filled with available
products that match your search. If you have a list of different
kinds of products to promote you can add up the total pages
of results for all of those products. As long as you can find 5
Amazon search result pages filled with matching products
you can leave that niche idea on your list.
5. Repeat steps 1-4 for any of the other niche ideas still on your
list

Average Reviews
The average number of reviews for the top products that come up
when you do a search in Amazon can tell us a lot about how often
those products are purchased online.

Look at the number of reviews for the top selling sewing machines on
Amazon:

Compare that to the number of reviews for built-in dishwashers:

Notice how much lower the review counts are? It’s not that people
don’t buy dishwashers – it’s that they don’t buy those online from
Amazon as often as they do sewing machines.

We just bought a new dishwasher and while we bought it online we
did so through Home Depot instead of Amazon because they’ll bring
it in the house and take away the old one. Plus, we could check it out
in person at their store before we purchased.

You want to see that a number of the products you want to promote
have hundreds of reviews. That will indicate that people are
comfortable buying those kinds of products on Amazon.

To check the number of reviews:

1. Bring up Amazon
2. Search for one of the products you found to promote related
to your niche:

3. Scroll through the top 5 rows of search results and look at the
number of reviews – are you seeing hundreds of reviews for at
least 10 products? If so, the product shows consumers are
comfortable buying online through Amazon.
4. Check each of the other products that you found to promote
for that niche to check their review counts
5. As long as you have at least one product on your list that has
at least 10 products with more than 100 reviews you can leave
that niche idea on your list

 6. Repeat steps #1-5 for any other niche ideas you still have on
your list

Level of Competition
The video I shared in Lesson #2 talked about how I analyze the first
page of Google to check the level of competition in my niche.

You ARE going to see Amazon show up at the top of search results for
your niche. It can’t be avoided but I don’t even count them as
competition when I’m analyzing the first page.

Instead, I’m looking for signs of weakness on the first page of Google
excluding Amazon.

These are signs of weakness I look for:

• [Link] on the first page (for some reason Target doesn’t

rank as well as Amazon and Walmart so if they’re showing on the
first page it can mean the competition on the first page is
relatively weak)
• Pinterest ranking on the first page – if one of the best results
Google could find to show on the first page of Google was a
Pinterest URL then there’s room for great content to rank
• eBay on the first page
• Other affiliate sites ranking on the first page
• Shopping sites I’ve never heard of before

But…just because there are no signs of weakness on the first page

doesn’t mean I’ll skip a niche.

If I don’t see any signs of weakness on the first page for a main phrase
related to my niche I’ll check the first page of Google for longer
phrases in my niche.

If there’s weakness for longer phrases then I can break into the niche
ranking first for those longer phrases and that will still bring traffic to my
site.

For example, if I analyzed the first page of Google for the phrase
“security cameras” (without quotes) it would look pretty competitive.

In the video I checked the first page of Google for the phrase “security
camera reviews” (without quotes) it still looked pretty competitive.

However, when I looked up phrases like “ring spotlight security

camera review” it looked less competitive.

To check competition for longer phrases in your niche:

1. Do a search in Google for a product you found to promote

related to your niche:

2. Scroll to the bottom of the first page of search results and look
at the Related Searches section:

 3. Click on the first phrase you see that doesn’t mention a
specific website:

4. Scan the first page of results for that phrase and look for at
least one of the following signs of weakness:

c. eBay
d. Other affiliate sites or blogs you don’t recognize
e. Retail sites you don’t recognize
5. That phrase you clicked on also has its own Related Searches
section – click on each of those that doesn’t mention a
website and analyze the first page of Google for those
phrases for signs of weakness
6. Click the back button on your browser to go back to the FIRST
list of Related Searches (the ones that came up after step #1
above) and repeat steps 3-6 to check the first page of
Google for those phrases AND the Related Searches for each
of those phrases (you’re basically digging two levels deep to
look for signs of weakness)
7. Repeat steps 1-6 for any other products you came up with to
promote related to your niche
8. Repeat steps 1-6 for any remaining niche ideas on your list

Choose Your Niche

By now you have researched each of the niche ideas you came up
with in Lesson #1 and you may have crossed off some because they
didn’t pass the steps above.

If you have more than one niche idea left on your list it’s time to pick
just ONE.

If there’s one you’re more excited to write about than any others go
with that one.

I’ve gone back and forth between my list of niche ideas and I’ve
finally settled on one:

SOLAR LIGHTS
I don’t want anyone to worry if we’re in the same niche!

No two people approach a niche the same way. We’re going to

write about different keywords, we’re going to have different
perspectives, we’re going to have different experiences to write
about, and we’re going to have our own images that won’t overlap.

I may include a number of kinds of solar lights but my initial focus will
be solar flowers.

While this niche doesn’t require as many reviews as some of my other

niche ideas I had on my list I came up with some ideas for things I
want to write about and now that they’re in my head that’s all I can
think about.

It’s that excitement and passion for the niche I’ve mentioned as
being an important part of one’s success!

I can still work in reviews but I’ve got a whole series of posts in mind
that I think are going to be very unique and will lead me right up to
that $1000/month around November/December.
