Problem Set No. 2
CE 410 – Hydraulics
Instructions: Answer each problem carefully. Write your solutions on clean, short bond paper.
Box your final answer.
1. Water flows through a pipe at 5 liters/sec, gage pressures of 12.5 kPa, 11.5 kPa, and 10.3
kPa are measured for P1, P2, and P3, respectively, compute the following:
a. Head loss between 1 and 2
b. Head loss between 1 and 3
c. Head loss between 2 and 3

2. An 8 hp pump is installed near the reservoir container oil having a specific gravity of 0.82.
the rate of flow of the pipe is 0.014 m3/s. The pressure heads at 1 and 2 are -28 kPa and
+290 kPa, respectively.
a. Compute the head added by the pump.
b. Compute the output hp of the pump.
c. Compute the efficiency of the pump.

3. Air flows through the device shown in the figure. If the flow rate is large enough, the
pressure within the constriction will be low enough to draw the water up into the tube.
Neglecting compressibility and viscous effects. Unit weight of water and air are 9.80 and
12 kN/m3 respectively.
a. Compote the pressure head of air at 2.
b. Determine the flow rate in liters/sec.
c. Determine the pressure needed at section 1 to draw the water into section 2.

4. For the venturi meter shown, the deflection of the mercury in the differential gauge is 0.36
m. Neglecting energy losses between A and B and relatively density of mercury = 13.6
a. Determine the change in pressure head between A and B.
b. Determine the velocity at A.
c. Determine the flow of water through the meter.

5. Pipeline A is connected to pipelines B and C which are parallel to each other at junction y
and merges again at junction x to form a single pipeline D. The rate of flow of water through
pipeline A is 0.050 m3/s and the total head loss from A to D is 9 .
a. Compute the head loss of pipeline B.
b. Compute the rate of flow of pipeline B.
c. Compute the diameter of pipeline C.

HAZEN
PIPES LENGTH (m) DIAMETER (mm) WILLIAMS
COEFFICIENT C
A 300 200 120
B 266 160 120
C 190 ? 120
D 510 250 120

6. A 800 mm diameter main carrying 2.4 m3/s branches into two pipelines between points A
and B, one 1200 m long with a diameter of 450 mm and one 1350 m long with a diameter
of 600 mm. Both pipes come together at point B and continues as a single 800 mm diameter
pipe. Assuming values of f equal to 0.022, 0.033, ang 0.024 respectively for the 900 mm,
600 mm, and 450 mm diameter pipes.
a. Determine the rate of flow of the 450 mm pipe.
b. Determine the rate of flow of the 600 mm pipe.
c. Determine the pressure head at B id the pressure head at A is 100 m.

7. In the figure shown, the elevation of the hydraulic grade line at B is 15.24 m and the pipes
BC and BD are arranged so that the flow from B divides equally, f = 0.02 for all pipes. Cv
= 0.968 and Cc = 0.620 for the orifice.
a. Compute the discharge of the pipeline from B to reservoir C.
b. What is the elevation of the end of the pipe at D?
c. What is the head that will be maintained on the 100 mm diameter orifice at E?

through a vertical, constant diameter pipe as shown. The air in the tank is pressurized to 50
kN/m2.
a. Determine the height to which the water rises.
b. Determine the water velocity in the pipe.
c. Determine the pressure in the horizontal part of the pipe.

9. Streams of water from two tanks impinge upon each other as shown. If viscous effects are
