Tutorial 2 (Balanced and Unbalanced Three-Phase Systems

Continue..)

1. The loads are connected to a common supply. The three load parameters are as
follows: LOAD 1: 250 kVA, PF 0.5 lagging; LOAD 2: 180 kW, PF 0.8
leading; LOAD 3: 300 kVA, 100kVAr lagging.
Determine:

(i) the average active power and reactive power of each of the loads;
(ii) the total active power and reactive power supplied by the supply;
(iii) the total kVA drawn from the supply in polar form;
(iv) the overall power factor (PF) of the system;

[(125 kW, 216 kVAr lagging, 180 kW, 135 kVAr leading, 283 kW, 100 kVAr lagging),
(588 kW, 181.5 kVAr), (615∠17.16ºkVA), , (0.955 lagging)]

2. A 500 kVA, 6.6 kV/ 550 V, 50 Hz single phase step down transformer is operating at full load
with an overall power factor of 0.6 lagging. The power factor is to be improved by adding
capacitance in parallel with the secondary until the load power factor becomes 0.9 lagging.
Determine:

(i) the kVAr of capacitance that needs to be added to give PF 0.9 lagging;
(ii) the capacitance in microfarads required for the correction;
(iii) the percentage of full load that the transformer is now operating when the
PF is 0.9 lagging;
(iv) the transformer primary current before and after correction;
(v) the transformer secondary current before and after correction;

[(255 kVAr leading), (2680µF), (66.7%), (75.76 A, 50.55 A), (909.1 A, 606.1 A)]
