Tutorial 1 (Balanced and Unbalanced Three-Phase Systems)

In Australia A = Red, B = White, C = Blue

1. A balanced STAR three phase load is connected to a positive phase sequence (ABC) 415 V,
50 Hz supply. Each phase load consists of a 20Ω resistance in parallel with a 20µF capacitor.
The line voltages are VRW = 41530º V, VWB = 415-90º V &
VBR = 415150º V. Determine:
(i) the phase impedance;
(ii) the phase current IRN, IWN, IBN;
(iii) the line currents IR, IW, IB;
(iv) the load Power Factor;
(v) the total power dissipated by the load.

[(19.69 – j2.47Ω), (12.1∠7.16ºA, 12.1∠-112.8ºA, 12.1∠127.16ºA), (12.1∠7.16ºA,

12.1∠-112.8ºA, 12.1∠127.16ºA), (0.992 leading), (8.61 kW)]

2. A balanced DELTA three phase load is connected to a negative phase sequence (CBA)
3.3 kV, 50 Hz supply. Each phase load is a 200Ω resistance connected in series with an
inductor of 0.51 H. The line voltages are VRW = 3.30º kV, VWB = 3.3120º kV &
VBR = 3.3-120º kV.
Determine:
(i) the phase impedance in polar form;
(ii) the phase current IRW, IWB, IBR;;
(iii) the line currents IR, IW, IB;
(iv) the load Power Factor;
(v) the total power dissipated by the load.

[(256.3∠38.7º Ω), (12.9∠-38.7ºA, 12.9∠81.3ºA, 12.9∠-158.7ºA), (22.3∠-8.7ºA,

22.3∠111.3ºA, 22.3∠-128.7ºA), (0.780 lagging), (99.8 kW)]

3. A Unbalanced STAR three phase load is connected to a positive phase sequence (ABC) four
wire system with a voltage of 11 kV, 50 Hz supply. The phase imedances are ZA= 48∠36.9ºΩ,
ZB = 108∠22.62º Ω and ZC = 77∠-30.0º Ω. The line voltages are VAB = 11∠120º kV, VBC = 11
∠0º kV & VCA = 11∠-120º kV.
Determine:
(i) the line currents IA, IB, IC;
(ii) the neutral current IN;
(iii) the power factor (PF) of each of the phase supplies;
(iv) the power supplied by each of the phases;
(v) the total power dissipated by the loads.

0.866 lead), (672 kW, 344.7 kW,453.6 kW), (1.471 MW)]
