MODULE 1: LESSON 1

A Tale of Two Time Worlds

“It’s up to you to decide what type of life you want to live.”

— MARIE FORLEO

Lesson Recap
Becoming a Time Genius is an inside-out job. The objective of this Fun Sheet
is to help you examine your current time story and beliefs, and identify where
you’re operating in the world of Time Stress so you can embrace the world of
a Time Genius.

• In the toxic world of Time Stress, you’re pulled in a zillion directions —

constantly scattered, distracted, overwhelmed, stressed, and depressed
by ALL THE THINGS you’re supposed to do.

• Americans are on screens for over 10 hours a day. The average person
spends 3 hours on email alone, and we check our phone once every
10 minutes. We’re on track to spend nearly 44 of our years starting at
screens! This hyperconnected pace is simply unsustainable.

• Research shows the stress and overwhelm of it all is taking a devastating

toll on our mental health and well-being. 90% of illnesses are either
caused or worsened by chronic stress. Cell phones are damaging
romantic relationships and leading to higher levels of depression. It’s a
public health crisis.

• But — good news! — living in the Toxic World of Time Stress is optional.
You can take back your power and opt-out of this madness starting now.

• Time Genius will show you how to leave that toxic world of Time Stress
behind for good. You’ll learn how to focus on what matters most, ignore what
doesn’t, and keep making meaningful, joyful progress towards your dreams.

• There are key thinking and behavioral distinctions between being stuck in
Time Stress and being a Time Genius, the central one being, “There’s just
never enough time,” versus, “There’s always enough time for what’s most
important.”

• Taking control of your time mindset is the first non-negotiable step for
success.

1 Discover Which World You Live In

Let’s take a look at a few of the key thinking and behavioral distinctions
between being stuck in the world of Time Stress vs. being a Time Genius.

S T E P 1 : Read the statements below, and put a “1” in the column next to the
statement that most closely aligns with your current thoughts and beliefs.

If neither statement resonates, you can leave it blank. But try not to get hung
up on the specific language — this is a binary exercise by design. The point
here is to get a better idea of which world we’re operating in. Then, if it’s not
the world we want, we have simple, clear steps to make a change.

any given moment is how we feel about it.

FUN SHEET

Ultimately, time is an emotional experience. Remember my example of

getting stuck in traffic? I’ve had two very different outcomes and experiences
of the same event: seething and stressed vs. relaxed and go-with-the-flow.

Think back to a time when you felt two drastically different ways about the
same situation. Really put yourself in the moment. Close your eyes if it helps.
Now describe, in detail, your experience when you approached this situation
with a Time Stress mindset. What thoughts were running through your head?
How did you feel in your body? Did your behavior affect others? What was
going on emotionally? What was the ultimate outcome?

FUN SHEET

Now recall a time when you approached the exact same situation from a
positive mindset. What were your thoughts? How did you feel differently —
physically, emotionally? Did others react differently to you? What was the
ultimate outcome?

Guess what? In that second scenario, you were in the Time Genius Zone.
It may have happened by chance… but in this program, you’ll learn how to
actively choose a productive and joyful experience of time so you can live
that way on purpose, all the time.

Prioritizing self-care is vital for achieving maximum effectiveness, as it ensures individuals are physically and mentally equipped to handle their responsibilities. Time Genius teachings emphasize scheduling self-care activities to prevent burnout and facilitate a balanced, joyful life. This focus on personal well-being is critical for maintaining high levels of productivity and satisfaction in both professional and personal contexts .

A negative score in the Time Genius assessment suggests a strong presence of Time Stress behaviors, indicating the need for significant changes. The next steps involve embracing a Time Genius paradigm, which includes focusing on meaningful tasks, setting clear boundaries, and developing a positive mindset towards time management. Engaging with tailored strategies and tools from the program can aid in this transition .

To maintain Time Genius habits, one should establish strong and consistent routines that prioritize self-care and continuous evaluation of tasks' importance. Setting firm boundaries against interruptions and distractions, regularly reflecting on time usage, and adjusting strategies as needed are also critical. Moreover, integrating feedback and learning from programs like Time Genius can provide sustained motivation and skill reinforcement .

Limiting distractions and interruptions can substantially enhance daily productivity by allowing deeper focus on essential tasks and reducing mental clutter. Methods include turning off notifications, allocating specific times for checking emails, using tools like do-not-disturb modes, and establishing physical spaces void of disruptions. Such practices contribute to sustained attention and effective task completion .

"Creating before consuming" helps overcome Time Stress by prioritizing meaningful and productive activities before engaging in passive consumption, such as scrolling through social media or aimlessly checking emails. This approach enables individuals to focus their energy on tasks that are aligned with their goals and values, leading to increased satisfaction and effective time use .

Frequently checking one’s phone first thing in the morning can create an immediate sense of stress and overwhelm, setting a reactive tone for the day. This behavior disrupts focus and fails to prioritize one's core tasks, contributing to a cycle of distraction and time mismanagement .

Setting boundaries is crucial for shifting from Time Stress to becoming a Time Genius, as it allows individuals to protect their time from unnecessary interruptions and distractions. By establishing clear availability and prioritizing self-care, individuals can maintain focus and increase their effectiveness. This practice also helps ensure that personal time is used meaningfully, reducing the likelihood of burnout and enhancing overall well-being .

Chronic stress is implicated in the causation or worsening of up to 90% of illnesses, leading to a significant public health concern . This is exacerbated by the heavy use of technology, as individuals spend extensive time on screens and are constantly interrupted by digital notifications, which contributes to mental health issues such as depression .

Believing "there's never enough time" often leads to a state of Time Stress characterized by constant overwhelm and distraction. This perspective results in a reactive approach to time, where one feels pulled in multiple directions and struggles with prioritization. Conversely, the belief "there's always enough time for what’s most important" aligns with the Time Genius mindset, which emphasizes intentional focus on high-priority tasks, leading to greater fulfillment and productivity .

Time is considered an emotional experience because our perception of time largely influences how we manage and respond to it. Changing this perception, such as through adopting a Time Genius mindset, can transform stressful situations into opportunities for growth and reflection. This shift increases productivity by aligning actions with core values and reducing emotional resistance to time-related challenges .
