Standard grade concrete (M45)
Step-1
Stipulation for proportioning
(a) Grade designation : M45
(b) Type of cement : OPC 43 grade conforming
to IS 269
(c) Type of mineral admixture : GGBFS
(d) Maximum nominal size of aggregate : 20mm
(e) Workability : 50mm (slump)
(f) Method of concrete placing : Pumping
(g) Type of aggregate : Crushed stone angular
aggregate
(h) Chemical admixture type : Superplasticizer
Step-2
Test data for materials
(a) Cement used : OPC 43
(b) Specific gravity of cement : 3.15
(c) Specific gravity of GGBFS :3
(d) Specific gravity of
a. Coarse aggregate : 2.74
b. Fine aggregate : 2.65
c. Chemical admixture : 1.145
(e) Water absorption
a. Coarse aggregate : 0.5 %
b. Fine aggregate : 1.0 %
Step-3
Target strength for mix proportioning
f ‘ck= f ck + X
f ‘ck= 45 + 6.5 = 51.5 N/mm2
or
f ‘ck= f ck + 1.65 X S
f ‘ck= 45 + 1.65 X 5 = 53.25 N/mm2
From table 2 (IS 10262:2019)
The higher value is adopted.
Therefore, target strength will be 53.25 N/mm2
Step-4
Approximate air content
From table 3 (IS 10262 : 2019)
The approximate amount of entrapped air to be expected in normal concrete is
1.0% 20mm maximum size aggregate
Step-5
Selection of water content ratio
From fig. 1 (IS 10262:2019)
Water cement ration is 0.32 for target strength 53.25N/mm2
0.32<0.50 (hence ok)
Step-6
Selection of water content
From table 4 (IS 10262:2019)
Estimate water content for 50mm slump = 186 kg
As superplasticizer is used in the water content may be reduced on the trail data
the water content reduction of 23% is considered, for 1% superplasticizer
= 186 X 0.77
= 143kg
Step-7
Calculation of cement content
Water-cement ratio =0.32
Cement content = 143/0.32
= 448 kg/m3
Cementitious material content = 448 kg/m3 > 300 kg/m3
GGBFS @ 30% of cementitious material content = 448 X 30%
= 135 kg/m3
Cement (OPC) = 448 – 135 = 313 kg/m3
Step-8
Proportioning of volume of coarse aggregate and fine aggregate
content
From table 5 (IS 10262:2019)
Volume of coarse aggregate corresponding to 20mm w/c ration is 0.5 = 0.62
Present case 0.32
Hence, volume of coarse aggregate is increased and volume of fine aggregate is
decreased .
w/c ratio is decreased by 0.18.
Therefore, volume of coarse aggregate increased by 0.036
The corrected volume of coarse aggregate for w/c ratio 0.32 = 0.62+0.036 =
0.656 m3
For pumpable these values may be reduced by 10%
Therefore, Volume of coarse aggregate = 0.656 X 0.9 = 0.59m3
Volume of fine aggregate = 1- 0.59 = 0.41m3
Step-9
Mix calculation
(a) Total volume = 1m3
(b) Volume of entrapped air in wet concrete = 0.01m3
(c) Volume of cement = (Mass of cement / Specific gravity of cement) X
(1/1000)
= (313/3.15) X (1/1000)
= 0.99m3
(d) Volume of GGBFS = (Mass of GGBFS / Specific gravity of GGBFS)
X (1/1000)
= (134/3) X (1/1000)
= 0.045m3
(e) Volume of water = (Mass of water / Specific gravity of water) X
(1/1000)
= (143/1) X (1/1000)
= 0.143m3
(f) Volume of chemical admixture = (Mass of chemical admixture /
Specific gravity of chemical admixture) X (1/1000)
= (4.48/1.145) X (1/1000)
= 0.00391m3
(g) Volume of total aggregate
= [(a-b) – (c+d+e+f)]
= [(1-0.01) – (0.99+0.045+0.143+0.00391)]
= 0.6987m3
(h) Mass of coarse aggregate = g X Volume of coarse aggregate X
Specific gravity of coarse aggregate X 1000
= 0.6987 X 0.59 X 2.74 X 1000
=1130 kg
(i) Mass of fine aggregate = g X Volume of fine aggregate X Specific
gravity of fine aggregate X 1000
= 0.6987 X 0.41 X 2.65 X 1000
=758 kg
Step-10
Mix proportions for trail number 1
Cement = 313 kg/m3
GGBFS = 134 kg/m3
Water = 143 kg/m3
Fine aggregate = 758 kg
Coarse aggregate = 1130 kg
Chemical admixture = 4.48 kg/m3
Free w/c ratio = 0.32
