1)A car covers the 1st half of the distance between two places at a speed of 40 km h 1 and the 2nd

half
at 60 km/h. What is the average speed of the car?
2) A non-stop bus goes from one station to another station with a speed of 54 km/h, the same bus
returns from the second station to the first station with a speed of 36 km/h. Find the average speed of
the bus for the entire journey.

Avg Speed = Total distance/ total time

=> 2s/(s/54+s/36)
=>2s/(2s+3s/108)
=> 2x108/5
=> 43.2 Kmph
3)The average speed of a bicycle, an athlete and car are 18 km/h, 7 m/s and 2 km/min. respectively.
Which of the three the fastest and which is the slowest?

To compare we must convert them all into one measurement. Kmph is the easiest.

Bicycle = 18kmph
Athlete = 7mps
Car = 2kmpmin

Athlete = 7 x 18/5 = 25.2 kmph

Car = 2 x 60 = 120 kmph

Hence, The Bicycle is the slowest and the car is the fastest
4)A car moves 30 km. in 30 min. and the next 30 km. in 40 min. calculate the average speed for the
entire journey.

Avg Speed = Total distance/ Total Time

60 km / 70 min
(70min/60min=1.1667 hrs)
60km/1.1667hr = 51.43 kmph
5) The car covers 30 km at a uniform speed of 30 km/h. What should be its speed for the next 90 km. if
the average speed for the entire journey is 60 km/h?

1hr for 30km. 1hr for 60km

Avg Time = 120/60= 2hrs
Hence, Avg Speed = 90Kmph
6) A boy runs for 10 min. at a uniform speed of 9 km/h. At what speed should he run for the next 20
min. So that the average speed comes to 12 km/h?

Avg Speed = Total distance/ total time

=> Total time = 30min
Total Distance = Avg Speed x total time = 6km

So distance covered in 10min is 9 x 1/6 = 1.5

6 - 1.5 = 4.5km

4.5/1/3 = 13.5kmph

The boy should run 13.5kmph

8. A particle was at rest from 9:00 am to 9:30 am. It moved at a uniform speed of 10 km/ h from 9:30 am
to 10:00 am. Find the average speed between (a) 9:00 am and 10:00 am (b) 9:15 am and 10:00 am

i) Avg speed = total distance/total time

=> 5km/1h
=> 5kmph

ii) 5km/45min
=> 10km/90min
=>3.33km/30min
=> 6.66kmph
