Introduction

Game-based learning (GBL) has emerged as an innovative pedagogical approach that leverages the
engagement and interactive nature of games to facilitate learning, particularly in subjects that
students often find challenging, such as mathematics. This approach integrates both traditional and
modern games into the learning process, aiming to enhance students' understanding and retention
of mathematical concepts through active participation and experiential learning.

Mathematics, a subject essential for the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills,
often suffers from a lack of student interest and engagement due to its abstract nature and
traditional teaching methods. Traditional teacher-centred approaches have been criticized for failing
to capture students' interest and for being overly reliant on rote memorization and textbook-based
instruction. To address these challenges, educators are increasingly turning to game-based learning
to create a more dynamic and interactive learning environment.

Research has shown that game-based learning can significantly improve students' mathematical
achievements and attitudes towards the subject. For instance, studies conducted in various
educational settings, including secondary schools in Brunei Darussalam and Indonesia, have
demonstrated that both digital and non-digital game-based learning methods can lead to substantial
improvements in students' performance in multiplication and division. The integration of games in
teaching not only enhances students' academic achievements but also fosters a more positive
attitude towards learning mathematics by making it more enjoyable and less intimidating.

Moreover, game-based learning supports a student-centered learning environment, which aligns

with contemporary educational philosophies that prioritize active learning and student engagement.
This approach encourages students to take an active role in their learning process, thereby
increasing their motivation and enhancing their cognitive and social skills.

In conclusion, game-based learning offers a promising alternative to traditional mathematics

instruction by leveraging the engaging and interactive nature of games to improve students'
understanding and enjoyment of mathematical concepts. As the education landscape continues to
evolve, the adoption of such innovative teaching methods is likely to play a crucial role in addressing
the persistent challenges associated with teaching and learning mathematics.
