Writing Task 2 Prompt

Some people believe that children should spend more time

participating in outdoor activities, while others argue that
academic studies are more important.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Band 7 Sample Answer
In recent years, the debate over whether children should prioritize
outdoor activities or focus more on their academic studies has
become a significant issue. While some argue that spending more
time on education is essential for a child’s future, others believe
that outdoor activities are equally important for their overall
development. This essay will discuss both perspectives and
explain why I think a balanced approach is best.
On the one hand, academic studies are crucial for building a
strong foundation for children’s future careers. Many believe that
dedicating more time to subjects such as mathematics, science,
and languages helps children excel in school and increases their
chances of securing well-paid jobs later in life. For instance,
research shows that students who perform well academically are
more likely to gain admission to prestigious universities.
Therefore, it is understandable why parents and educators
emphasize the importance of spending more time on studies.
On the other hand, outdoor activities provide numerous benefits
that cannot be overlooked. Physical activities, such as playing
sports or exploring nature, help children develop essential skills
like teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving. Moreover,
spending time outdoors contributes to better physical health and
reduces the risk of issues like obesity. Additionally, outdoor
activities allow children to take a break from academic pressure,
which is vital for their mental well-being. For example, a recent
study found that students who regularly participate in outdoor
activities tend to perform better academically because they are
less stressed.
In my opinion, both academic studies and outdoor activities are
important for a child’s holistic development, and neither should
be neglected. A balanced approach, where children spend
adequate time on their studies while also engaging in outdoor
activities, can lead to the best outcomes. Schools and parents
should work together to create schedules that accommodate both
aspects, ensuring that children grow into well-rounded individuals.
In conclusion, while academic studies are vital for a successful
career, outdoor activities play an equally important role in
developing life skills and maintaining health. A balance between
the two is essential for fostering the overall growth of children.
