Ask students to identify the verbs and
their tenses.
Briefly discuss how these differ in terms
of their function in a sentence
2. Motivation Introduce the concept of timelines to
visually explain the sequence of actions.
• Past Tense: She walked to
school yesterday.
• Past Perfect Tense: She had
walked to school before it
started raining.
Why do you think we use different
tenses here?
Student 1: To show which happened
first.
Teacher: Exactly! The past tense shows
a specific past action, while the past
perfect shows what was already
completed before another past action.
3. Activity Comparison of the past and past perfect
tenses with their structures and
examples.
Past Tense: Verb (base + -ed) or
irregular verb.
Past Perfect Tense: Had + past
participle.
Examples:
• The train left at 8:00 AM. (Past)
• The train had left by the time I
reached the station. (Past
perfect tense)
Now, complete these sentences:
1. By the time the teacher arrived,
the students_____ (start) their
activity.
2. The cat_____ (eat) its food
before the dog came in.
4. Analysis Ask students to compare the sentences:
Why is “had” used in one sentence but
not the other one?
5. Abstraction Provide sentence starters:

_______.

• We had planned the itinerary
