Project Title: DIY Small Room Cooler
Objective
To construct a compact and energy-efficient room cooler using a 12V DC fan,
a DC water pump, a mesh of wooden straws as cooling grills, and a tin
casing, powered by a 12V motorbike battery.
Materials Used
1. Casing: Tin box for housing all components.
2. Fan: Small 12V plastic fan for airflow.
3. Water Pump: DC water pump for circulating water.
4. Cooling Grill: Mesh made of wooden straws for water retention and air
cooling.
5. Power Source: 12V motorbike battery.
6. Water Reservoir: Integrated in the tin casing for water storage.
7. Additional Materials: Tubes, connectors, glue, and sealant.
Working Principle
The cooler is based on evaporative cooling, where warm air passes through a
wet wooden straw mesh. The water evaporates, absorbing heat and lowering
the air temperature. A 12V fan drives airflow, and the water pump circulates
water over the mesh.
Design and Assembly
1. Tin Casing:
Acts as the structural framework, with openings for air intake and outlet.
The casing ensures durability and portability.
2. Cooling Grill (Wooden Straw Mesh):
Wooden straws are arranged into a mesh to create a porous surface for water
retention and airflow.
The natural properties of wood enhance water absorption, improving the
cooling effect.
3. Water Circulation:
A small DC water pump draws water from the reservoir and distributes it
evenly across the wooden straw mesh.
4. Fan Placement:
A 12V plastic fan is installed behind the mesh to pull air through the wet
straws, ensuring efficient cooling.
5. Power Source:
A motorbike battery provides a reliable and portable power supply for the fan
and pump.
Scientific Explanation
1. Evaporative Cooling:
As air passes through the wet wooden straw mesh, water absorbs heat from
the air to evaporate, reducing air temperature.
The wooden straws enhance water retention, maximizing the evaporation
rate.
2. Thermodynamics:
Heat energy from the warm air is transferred to the water, which vaporizes.
This reduces the temperature of the air exiting the cooler.
3. Energy Efficiency:
The use of DC components and a battery minimizes power consumption,
making the system eco-friendly
Advantages
1. Compact Design:
The tin casing and small components make it portable and suitable for
confined spaces.
2. Eco-Friendly:
Utilizes water and wooden materials, avoiding harmful refrigerants.
3. Cost-Effective:
Made from readily available and affordable materials.
4. Energy Efficient:
Operates on a 12V motorbike battery, ensuring low energy consumptions
Applications
Cooling small rooms, workstations, or personal spaces.
Educational demonstration of heat transfer and energy-efficient cooling
systems.
Conclusion
This project successfully demonstrates the application of evaporative cooling
and thermodynamic principles using a simple and energy-efficient design.
The integration of a wooden straw mesh as a cooling grill enhances the
water retention and cooling effect. Powered by a 12V motorbike battery, this
cooler is portable, eco-friendly, and ideal for small-scale cooling needed.
