Week 4 Handout: Speaking and Vocabulary - Agreeing and Disagreeing

1. Vocabulary: Phrases for Agreeing and Disagreeing (Cụm từ diễn đạt sự đồng ý và
không đồng ý)

Agreeing Phrases: (Câu đồng ý)

• Absolutely – "Absolutely, I think exercise is essential."


Chắc chắn rồi - “ Chắc chắn rồi, tôi nghĩ việc tập luyện là cực kì quan trọng.”
• I couldn’t agree more – "I couldn’t agree more with your point about healthy
eating."
Tôi không thể tán thành hơn - “ Tôi không thể tán thành hơn với quan điểm của bạn về
việc ăn uống lành mạnh.”
• That’s a good point – "That’s a good point about studying regularly."
Đó là một ý hay đó - “ Đó là một ý kiến hay về việc học thường xuyên.”
• You’re right – "You’re right, online shopping is convenient."
Bạn đúng đó - “ Bạn đúng đó, mua sắm trực tuyến rất tiện lợi nha”
• Exactly – "Exactly, that’s what I was thinking too."
Chính xác - “Chính xác, đó là điều mà tôi cũng đang nghĩ tới.”

Disagreeing Phrases: (Câu phản đối)

• I’m not sure about that – "I’m not sure about that; maybe there’s another way."
Tôi không chắc về điều đó đâu.... - “Tôi không về điều đó đâu; có lẽ vẫn còn cách khác”
• I don’t really agree – "I don’t really agree with banning mobile phones in class."
Tôi không đồng ý lắm về....- “Tôi không đồng ý lắm về việc cấm điện thoại trong lớp.”
• I see your point, but... – "I see your point, but social media can be helpful."
Tôi hiểu ý của bạn rồi, nhưng mà...- “ Tôi hiểu ý của bạn rồi, nhưng mà mạng xã hội
cũng có thể có ích mà.”
• That’s true, but... – "That’s true, but there are exceptions."
Điều đó cũng đúng á, nhưng mà...- “ Điều đó cũng đúng á, nhưng mà vẫn có những
ngoại lệ nhé.”
• I’m afraid I disagree – "I’m afraid I disagree with that statement."
Tôi xin lỗi nhưng tôi không đồng ý với... - “Tôi xin lỗi nhưng tôi không đồng ý với câu
nói đó đâu.”

2. Speaking Practice:

Activity 1: Opinion Sharing (Chia sẻ cảm nghĩ)

o Examples of statements:
▪ "Learning English is easy."
▪ "Everyone should be vegetarian."
▪ "Reading books is better than watching TV."
o Share your opinion about these topics by using one of the vocabulary
phrases.

Activity 2: Express Your Opinion (Diễn đạt quan điểm cá nhân)

• Answer the questions below by using the agreeing and disagreeing phrases.
Technology
1. "Smartphones are essential in today’s world."
2. "Social media has a negative impact on society."
3. "Artificial intelligence will replace human jobs."
Education
1. "Homework should be banned in schools."
2. "Learning online is better than attending classes in person."
3. "Exams are the best way to test students' knowledge."
Lifestyle
1. "It’s better to live in a big city than in the countryside."
2. "People should exercise every day."
3. "A healthy diet is more important than regular exercise."

Activity 3: "Would You Rather" (Liệu ban có...)


• Objective: Improve fluency while using agreeing/disagreeing phrases.
• How to Do It:
o Look at the questions’ set and answer them.

Would You Rather Questions:

• Would you rather live in a big city or a small town? Why?


• Would you rather be able to speak every language in the world or be
able to talk to animals?
• Would you rather have unlimited time or unlimited money?
• Would you rather travel to the past or the future?
• Would you rather always have to tell the truth or always have to lie?
• Would you rather be famous for your talent or for your intelligence?
• Would you rather live by the beach or in the mountains?
• Would you rather work from home or in an office with your colleagues?
• Would you rather have a job you love that pays little or a job you
dislike that pays a lot?
• Would you rather read a book or watch a movie?
• Would you rather never use social media again or never watch TV
again?
• Would you rather be able to fly or be invisible?
• Would you rather live without music or without movies?
• Would you rather have a personal chef or a personal driver?
• Would you rather spend a year living in a different country or stay in
your home country forever?
• Would you rather have more time to relax or more time to learn
something new?
• Would you rather always be 10 minutes late or always be 20 minutes
early?
• Would you rather be very funny or very smart?
• Would you rather be able to remember everything you’ve ever learned
or be able to learn something new instantly?
• Would you rather explore space or explore the ocean?

3. Role-Playing Scenarios:

Activity 4: Role-Play Debate (Đối thoại nhập vai)


• How to Do It:
o Choose a scenario, such as "Choosing a holiday destination," "Buying a
new phone," or "Deciding on a class project."
o Each person takes a stance
o Use phrases to agree/disagree with each other's suggestions.

Activity 5: Picture Comparison (10 minutes) (So sánh tranh)

• How to Do It:
o Look at the picture and describe which destination you prefer and why.

5. Homework Speaking Task

• Task: Record a short audio (1-2 minutes) expressing their opinion on one of the
following topics:

o "Is technology making our lives better or worse?"


o "Is it better to have a few close friends or many acquaintances?"
o "Should people learn a new language?"
