Study Guide of the Fifth Block

Introduction

The integrated modular system is introduced for the first time at Faculty
of Medicine Cairo University in (2018/2019) to assure the acquisition of
6 key competencies
Competency (1): The graduate as a health care provider
Competency (2): The graduate as a health promoter
Competency (3): The graduate as a professional
Competency (4): The graduate as a scholar and scientist
Competency (5): The graduate as a member of the health team and a part of the health care system
Competency (6): The graduate as a lifelong learner and researcher

The program is composed of vertical and horizontal modules each has its
own intended learning outcomes (ILOs) to cover finally together all
aspects of the key competencies a graduate is expected to acquire.

What What is meant by block and module?by block and module?

- Each year is formed of two semesters

- Each semester consists of modules where topics are offered by many departments in an integrated approach in
a given duration to achieve certain ILOs.

- Each module has a certain code

- At the end of each module, students attend a “multiple choice questions (MCQs)” exam which represents 30%
of the marks allocated to the module.

- At the end of the year, students attend final exams for all studied modules in form of OSPE (objective structured
practical exam) which represents 30% of the marks allocated to each module and final written exams (short
essay, MCQs, cases, extended matching questions) which represents 40% of the marks allocated to each module.

What is meant by vertical modules?

Beside the horizontal modules some vertical modules are delivered
throughout the 5 years in the form of 1 or 2 hours each week:
1- Investigative Medicine
It weighs 2 credit points (CR) and is delivered in 30 contact hours and 20
non-contact hours
