Writing Task 2 – Direct Question / Two-part Question Essay


Direct question essays are also known as ‘Double question’ or ‘Two-part question’ essays. They are distinguished
by two characteristics:

• They have one statement with two different questions after it.
• The questions may or may not be linked.

4-Paragraph Essay Structure

Introduction • Paraphrase the question


• Thesis statement – state your answers to both questions

Main body paragraph 1 – • Topic sentence – state your answer

Increasing the price of petrol is the best way to solve growing traffic and pollution problems.

The increase of traffic and pollution are two of the main problems that we face in modern life, mainly in big
cities. Although some people think that higher petrol prices could solve these issues, I think there are more
efficient and fair actions.

Body – 1: Answer the first question

There are also a lot of measures that can be taken to tackle with both of the problems. Firstly, governments

increase the use of public transportation and other means of transport, ___________. Finally, we have
___________ with the current development of information technology to ___________ and therefore decrease

To sum up, even though rising petrol prices appears as an attractive solution to transportation and pollution
problems, there are a lot of better actions we should try before such as developing more fuel-efficient cars or
promoting the public transport use.
