Packer Elastomer
Guidebook

Rev 10.24.14

Introduction:

Giant Oil Tools would like to introduce our new Packer Elastomer Guidebook. In these pages you will find some practical infor-
mation on the different types of elastomers Giant offers on new complete tools as well as re-dress kits for your existing tools.
We hope you will find this a useful resource in your day-to-day operations.

Elastomer Definition:

Although "elastomer" is often used interchangeably with "rubber," its formal definition describes it as a "polymer with a high
molecular weight that can be or has been altered to have minimal plastic deformation and a quick, almost complete recovery
from stretching or compression." Typically, we refer to this material as "uncured" or "unprocessed" rubber or polymer before
any modifications have been made. When the basic high molecular weight polymer is transformed to a non-plastic state with-
out any plasticizers or other additives and tested at room temperature, it must meet certain requirements to be classified as an
elastomer:

• It must be able to withstand a 100% stretch without breaking.

• After being stretched to 100% for five minutes, it must return to within 10% of its original length within five
minutes of being released.

Note: Materials with very high hardness or modulus may not exhibit these properties but are still considered elastomers. The
American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) uses these standards to define the term "elastomer."

Giant Oil Tools keeps a diverse collection of packers, O-Rings, and seals to help keep our clients supplied for many differ-
ent well conditions and tool needs. Below is basic guidelines of the different types of rubber available for new packers
and re-dress kits.

Acrylonitrile-Butadiene (NBR)

Commonly referred to as Nitrile or NBR, acrylonitrile butadiene copolymer is a rubber sealing compound containing acry-
lonitrile for resistance to oil and fuel. With the proper balance of acrylonitrile NBR has excellent sealing characteristics
balanced against maintaining elasticity and wear resistance.

Heat Resistance: Up to 100°C (212°F) with shorter life @ 121°C (250°F)

Cold Flexibility: Approximately -20°C (-4°F)

Chemical Resistance:

Aliphatic hydrocarbons
HFA, HFB, & HFC hydraulic fluids
Dilute acids, bases, and salt solutions at moderate temps
Water & Steam up to 149°C (300°F)
Ozone, aging and weathering

Not Compatible With:

Chlorinated hydrocarbons
Polar solvents (ketones, esters, and ethers)
Strong Acids

Hydrogenated Nitrile (HNBR or HSN)

Hydrogenated nitrile is a synthetic polymer that results from the hydrogenation of nitrile rubber (NBR). Superior mechan-
ical characteristics, particularly high strength, helps reduce extrusion and wear.

Heat Resistance: Up to 150°C (300°F)

Cold Flexibility: Down to ~ -48°C (-55°F)

Chemical Resistance:

Aliphatic hydrocarbons
Vegetable and animal fats and oils
HFA, HFB, & HFC hydraulic fluids
Dilute acids, bases, and salt solutions at moderate temps
Water & Steam up to 149°C (300°F)
Ozone, aging and weathering

Not Compatible With:

Chlorinated hydrocarbons
Polar solvents (ketones, esters, and ethers)
Strong Acids

Fluorocarbon (FKM) / Viton®

Fluorocarbon and Viton® are renowned for their exceptional ability to withstand harsh chemicals and extreme temperatures,
making them well-suited for sealing purposes in challenging industrial settings. While Fluorocarbon encompasses various types
of flouroelastomer materials, Viton® excels as a specialized formulation designed for superior sealing capabilities. Knowing the
distinctions between these substances is crucial in choosing the best option for particular application needs, guaranteeing op-
timal effectiveness and dependability.

Fluorocarbon (FKM) displays exceptional resistance to extreme temperatures, ozone, oxygen, mineral oil, synthetic hydraulic
fluids, fuels, aromatic compounds, and a variety of organic solvents and chemicals. However, it is not ideal for use in low tem-
peratures and is generally only suitable for static applications up to -26°C (-15°F). Certain variations may be suitable for use at
even lower temperatures, down to -46°C (-50°F). When used in dynamic conditions, the lowest service temperature range is
typically between -15°C and -18°C (5°F and 0°F).

Heat Resistance: Up to 204°C (400°F) and higher temperatures with shorter life expectancy

Cold Flexibility: Down to -26°C (-15°F) (some to -46°C (-50°F))

Chemical Resistance:

Mineral oil and grease, ASTM oil No. 1, and IRM 902 and IRM 903 oils.
Non-flammable hydraulic fluids (HFD).
Silicone oil and grease.
Mineral and vegetable oil and grease
Aliphatic hydrocarbons (butane, propane, natural gas).
Aromatic hydrocarbons (benzene, toluene).
Chlorinated hydrocarbons (trichloroethylene and carbon tetrachloride).
Gasoline (including high alcohol content).
High vacuum.
Very good ozone, weather, and aging resistance.

Not Compatible With:

Glycol based brake fluids.

Ammonia gas, amines, alkalis.
Superheated steam.
Low molecular weight organic acids (formic and acetic acids).

FCM TFE/Fluoroelastomer (AFLAS®)

AFLAS® fluoroelastomers are highly resistant to compression set and maintain their sealing properties even at high tempera-
tures and under extreme pressure. This makes them ideal for use in packer elements, which are used to create a seal be-
tween the casing and tubing in oil and gas wells. These packer elements must be able to withstand harsh conditions, includ-
ing high temperatures and corrosive chemicals, to prevent leaks and maintain the integrity of the well.

In addition to their exceptional resistance to heat and chemicals, AFLAS® fluoroelastomers also have low permeability, mak-
ing them an excellent choice for packer elements. This low permeability ensures that the packer elements can maintain their
sealing properties over time, even in the presence of harsh chemicals and high temperatures.

AFLAS® fluoroelastomers are also highly resistant to wear and tear, making them a durable choice for packer elements that
must withstand frequent use and exposure to harsh conditions. They have a long service life and require minimal mainte-
nance, reducing downtime and increasing efficiency in oil and gas operations.

Overall, AFLAS® fluoroelastomers are an excellent material for packer elements in the oil and gas wells that have high tem-
perature and corrosive conditions due to their exceptional durability, resistance to heat and chemicals, low permeability, and
long service life. They are a reliable and cost-effective choice for ensuring the integrity of oil and gas wells and maintaining
safe and efficient operations.

Heat Resistance: Up to approximately 232°C (450°F)

Cold Flexibility: Down to approximately -9°C (15°F)

Compatible with:

Bases
Phosphate Esters
Amines
Engine Oils
Steam & Hot Water
Pulp and Paper Liquors

Not Compatible With:

Aromatic Fuels
Ketones
Chlorinated Hydrocarbons
