Simultaneous equations:

Make sure there is same

coe icient in front of one of the
4𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 11 letters ( this case y) … Do that by
2𝑥 + 𝑦 = 3 X3 expanding the equation / multiply
by 3

All terms are 3 times bigger. Now the

equations are ready to be taken away. It can
4𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 11
go both ways. To avoid negatives, usually go
6𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 9 Eq2 -eq1 big take-away small, focusing on “x” terms. In
this case bottom Eq - top Eq

6𝑥 − 4𝑥 = 9 − 11 simplify Since the y-terms are cancelled, you get a

normal equation with x … solve as usually.

2𝑥 = −2 Divide by 2

Once have x, substitute that in any of the

𝑥 = −1 upper equations to find y. Usually the one with
smallest numbers is best, but it does not
matter.

Let x = -1 in : 2𝑥 + 𝑦 = 3
2 × (−1) + 𝑦 = 3
−2 + 𝑦 = 3 Add 2 on both sides

𝑦=5

So, solution is x = -1 and y = 5
