ecological succession
INTRODUCTION
Recall that each species has role in an ecosystem. In each role, they show
different species interactions that has been divided into five basics types. The
species interaction affects the resource use and population sizes of the species in
an ecosystem. Disturbing these species interactions can lead into serious
imbalances in nature.

ACTIVITY 1 TIMEFRAME: 15 MINS

WHAT TO KNOW
Ecologist classify the species interaction into five basic types which are the
(1) competition, (2) Predation, (3) Parasitism, (4) Mutualism, and (5)
Commensalism.

WHAT I NEED (MATERIALS)

ACTIVITY 2 TIMEFRAME: 15 MINS

WHAT TO KNOW
Population can grow, shrink and remain stable in response to the changes
in environmental conditions. It means that no populations can continue grow
indefinitely because of limitations on resources and because of the competition
among species for those resources.

Guide Questions:
1. What causes the population of Ireland to decrease?

2. What is carrying capacity?

3. What are the limiting factors of carrying capacity?

4. What happens to the fish in a fish bowl/aquarium if they continue to

reproduce?

5. What do the black bears do to when space and food supplies are
reduced?

6. What is environmental resistance?

ecological succession
ACTIVITY 3 TIMEFRAME: 15 MINS

WHAT TO KNOW
The structure and species composition of communities and ecosystems
changes in response to the changing environmental conditions, such as fires,
eruptions, climate change and converting forest into farm lands, in the process of
ecological succession.
