Environmental engineering -1 (CE 1505)
1. Estimate the hydraulic gradient in a 2 m diameter smooth concrete pipe carrying a
discharge of 3 cumecs at 10°C temperature by using (a) Darcy-Weisbach formula; (b)
by Manning's formula, (c) by Hazen-William's formula; (d) by Modified Hazen-
William’s formula. Assume suitable data not given.

2. Centrifugal Pump driven by an electric motor lifts water through a total height of 50
Metres from the reservoir to the discharge end. The Pump efficiency is 77 per cent
and the motor efficiency is 85 Per cent. The lift is through 300 metres length of 10 cm
diameter pipe and the Pumping rate is 1500 litres per minute. If 4f = 0.025, and power
costs 25 paise Per kilowatt hour, what is the cost of power for pumping four million
litres of water?

3. A settling basin is designed to have a surface overflow 32.6 m/day. Determine the
overall removal obtained for a suspension with size distribution given below. The
specific gravity of the particles is 1.2 and the water temperature is 20 oC, at which the
dynamic viscosity is 1.027 centipoise and the density 0.997 g/cc.

greater than size (per cent)

4. A coagulation-sedimentation plant clarifies 40 million litre of water every day. The

quantity of filter alum required at the plant is 18 mg/l. If the raw water is having an
alkalinity equivalent to 5 mg/l of CaCO 3, determine the quantity of filter alum and the
quick lime (containing 85% of CaO) required per year by the plant. Given the
molecular weights as: [Al =27, S = 32, O = 16, H = I, Ca = 40, C = 12].

5. Design a coagulation-cum-sedimentation tank with continuous flow for a population

of 60,000 persons with a daily per capita water allowance of 120 litres. Make suitable
assumptions where needed.

6. Two primary settling basins are 26 m in diameter with a 2.1 m side water depth.
Single effluent weirs are located on the peripheries of the tank. For a water flow of
26,000 m3/d, calculate:

(i) Surface area and volume;

(ii) Overflow rate in m3/m2.d;

(iii) Detention time in hours; and

(iv) Weir loading in m3/m.d.
