Assalamualaikum [Link], the honorable examiners of this seminar proposal good

morning…….. in this special occasion I’m Dwi Yulianti Irham the students of
English education department. First of all i would like to thank to the examiners
who have given me an opportunity to present about my research proposal entitled a
case study on difficulties in comprehending narrative text of tenth-grade students at
MAN 2 Palembang. Well the presentation is divided into three sections. The first is
introduction, second is literature review and third is research methodology. And at
the end of the presentation, I will be willing to answer the questions and accept any
suggestions that given by the examiners.
Okee, we got to the first explanation, introduction.
- Background of the study
Reading is the one of the basic skills in English. According to Frankle et al in 2016,
reading is a process of arranging meaning from written text. It is a complex skill
requiring coordination of a number of related sources and information.
And then, reading is becoming increasingly critical skill that students are required
to learn and students should have good reading skills as the basic ability in
English. And reading comprehension indicates that the students comprehend
both of what a written work is about and why it was written.
Gilakjani and sabouri 2016 defined that reading comprehension is quality of
capturing a written text, it means the students can read and understand the text
clearly.
However, students have a lot of difficulty to understand what they read.
According to shehu 2015, common difficulties that children have with reading
comprehension, include vocabulary, working memory, not spending too much
time in reading, and the kind of the text that being read.
And based on the syllabus in the 2013 curriculum’s latest revision, English
education focuses on texts as the subject matter in school.
Panda 20019 states that students in high school are expected to have a firm graps
on specific types of reading material, including descriptive, recounting, and
narrative text.
And in this research the researcher focuses on the narrative text, which this type
of reading tries to entertain or captivate its reader, and it can be more fascinating
than other forms of writing. However, comprehending narrative text is not easy
thing to do.
Knapp and watskin in 2005 stated that narrative text is not only about amusing or
entertaining the audience or reader, but also has grammar context, structure,
social role, and text organization.
All of those allow for difficulties in comprehending narrative text. Therefore, of
there are misunderstanding in capturing aspects of the narrative text, the
students will have difficulties reading and comprehending the narrative text.
Furthermore, the researcher come to the conclusion that an extremely high
percentage of students’ difficulties to comprehend what they read, especially in
narrative text. Because these difficulties may vary from school to school.
Therefore, the researcher gets interested to conduct a research entitled “a case
study on difficulties in comprehending narrative text of tenth-grade students in
MAN 2 palembang”.
- Previous study
Result from previous studies also showed students faced difficulties. Prihatini
(2020), found that there are several difficulties in students’ level of reading
comprehension, such as literal, interpretative, critical and creative. Khairunnisa and
widodo (2019) also indicated that eight difficulties faced by students, including
issues with perspective, moral worth, vocabulary, sentences meaning, grammar,
plot and information.
- Research problem and objective
Based on the background of the study, the research problem is formulated with the
following question; what are the difficulties faced by students of Man 2 Palembang
in comprehending narrative text. And based on the research problem above the
objective of the study is to find out the difficulties faced by students of Man 2
Palembang in comprehending narrative text.
- The significances of the study
There are several significances of the study in this research, first for the teacher of
English, it can be used for get more information related to the difficulties in
comprehending narrative text.
For the students, the researcher expect the students to know their difficulties in
reading comprehension, especially in narrative text. They are able to focus more
intently on learning reading and participate more actively in class.
And for other researcher, the researcher expect that this research can serve as a
guide or source for future researcher who want to research the topic.
Literature review
There are several points in literature review
First reading, second reading comprehension, third aspects of reading
comprehension which are determining of the main idea, locating references,
understanding the vocabulary in the context, making inferences, and detail
information. Next narrative text and the structure of the narrative text, students
difficulties in reading comprehension which are interlingual difficulty and
intralingual difficulty, and then the factors causing students difficulties in reading
comprehension which are students’ background knowledge, teacher’s techniques,
and students environmental.
- Previous related study
First from kusuma (2020), the study showed that there four difficulties faced by
students in reading comprehension, namelt determining the main idea,
understanding vocabulary, making inferences and detailing information.
Second study from Dona apriyani (2022), she concluded that there are some
difficulties in reading comprehension faced by students such as determining the

sentence, and detail information.
Third from ardilla and wuljanto (2020), they found that four main difficulties in
reading comprehension such as linguistic textbook, working memory, vocabulary
and absence intensive reading.
Research methodology
- Research design, the research is qualitative research to investigate a
phenomenon and answer the questions through a qualitative approach. And a
case study research design will be chosen because it is interesting in terms of
findings out experiences, perceptions, and insight of students who have
difficulties in reading comprehension.
- Operational definitions, this study focuses on students’ difficulties in
comprehending narrative text. To avoid misunderstandings about this study,
keywords such as students difficulties in this study refers to difficulties
faced by students in reading comprehension narrative text, reading
comprehension refers to the process of grasping the meaning and aims of
narrative text when reading and narrative text, refers to the text in the form
of narrative read by the students.
- Participants of the study, the population of the study is all of the tenth grade
students in man 2 Palembang consist of 4 sciences classes and 3 social
classes. And for the sample, the research will use convenience sampling with
choosing 7 students that chosen by school to be participants.
- Data collection, one of the data collection in qualitative research is
interview. The researcher will use interview with semi structure interview as
the data collection of this research
- Data analysis, for the data analysis the researcher will use thematic data
analysis with following the Creswell’s theory.
- Trustworthiness, to validating the data collection of the research the
researcher will use member checking as one of the technique of the
trustworthiness.
The honorable examiners I have presented all of my research proposal from
section one until section three. That’s all my presentation, thank you so much
for your nice attention. Well i’m reading to answer the question and I hope I
can answer the question from the examiners and I hope the examiners will give
me any suggestions related to my research proposal thank u.

The main difficulties faced by the students include issues with vocabulary, understanding the grammar context, structure, and social role of narrative texts. They also struggle with determining the main idea, making inferences, and understanding detailed information. These difficulties are exacerbated by factors such as students' background knowledge, teaching techniques, and their environment .

The research uses a qualitative approach with a case study design to explore the experiences, perceptions, and insights of the students. Data collection involves semi-structured interviews, and data analysis follows thematic analysis based on Creswell's theory. Trustworthiness is ensured through techniques such as member checking .

The research proposal distinguishes narrative text by its purpose to entertain and engage the reader more than other text types, such as descriptive or recounting texts. It highlights that narrative texts incorporate complex elements like grammar context, text organization, and social roles, which pose comprehension challenges for students compared to other text types .

Reading comprehension in the context of narrative texts is defined as the ability to capture the meaning and essence of the text, which includes realizing what the text is about and why it was written. This entails several skills such as understanding vocabulary within context, determining the main idea, making inferences, and comprehending detailed information .

Factors contributing to difficulties include students' background knowledge, teachers' instructional techniques, and the learning environment. Mitigation strategies in an educational context might involve enhancing vocabulary instruction, using varied teaching methodologies, and fostering a supportive learning environment that encourages extensive and intensive reading practice .

The research uses convenience sampling to select participants, which involves choosing 7 students recommended by the school. This method is justified as it allows for easier access to a manageable number of participants who presumably have pertinent experiences or insights into the research problem .

The research proposal suggests using member checking to ensure the trustworthiness of its findings. This involves verifying the collected data with the participants to confirm accuracy. Such measures are necessary to maintain the validity and reliability of qualitative research by ensuring that interpretations accurately reflect the participants' views .

The research proposal cites studies by Prihatini (2020), Khairunnisa and Widodo (2019), Kusuma (2020), and Dona Apriyani (2022), highlighting issues such as difficulties with perspective, moral worth, vocabulary, grammar, and plot in narrative texts. These studies contribute findings on the specific challenges students face, including determining main ideas, making inferences, detailing information, and undertaking intensive reading .

The structure of narrative texts contributes significantly to comprehension difficulties because it not only aims to amuse or entertain but also includes intricate grammar, context, and social and organizational roles. Misunderstanding these structural elements can lead to comprehension issues for students .

For English teachers, the study provides insights into student difficulties, facilitating better-targeted instructional strategies. For students, it aims to enhance their awareness of their own comprehension challenges, promoting active learning and participation. For future researchers, it serves as a reference or guide for studying similar topics in educational contexts .
