CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM

Introduction

In today’s competitive hospitality industry, guest satisfaction is paramount. Modern travelers

increasingly expect personalized services that cater to their individual preferences, making

customization a crucial factor in creating memorable experiences. Rather than opting for generic

offerings, today’s guests seek unique experiences that reflect their personal tastes. As a result,

hospitality businesses are adopting innovative methods to enhance customer experiences through

personalization.

In today's hospitality industry, personalization plays a essential role in driving success.

According to Ashley Reichheld (2018), hotels are increasingly gathering guest data to create

smooth and user-friendly experiences that enhance deeper emotional connections with customers.

Using information such as room preferences, dietary restrictions, and recreational interests can

greatly enhance a guest's experience. Nevertheless, businesses face challenges in balancing

personalized services with operational difficulties, including budget limitations and the necessity

of maintaining high standards of guest care. Lilyana Bardukova (2023) further emphasizes that

consumer preferences in hospitality are changing rapidly, and businesses must adapt by providing

customized, genuine experiences that meet these changing demands. What's more, employing

technology such as mobile applications and online surveys can assist data collection, allowing for

more effective personalization while lessening the workload on staff.

The study, "Tailoring Hospitality: Leveraging Guest Preferences to Improve Experiences,"

focuses specifically on resorts located in Misamis Oriental, from Opol to Lugait. These resorts

exemplify how hospitality businesses can customize their services to meet individual guest

preferences, thereby enhancing the overall experience. This research emphasizes that although
customization is important, the genuine care and attention from staff are essential for creating

unforgettable guest experiences. Incorporating elements such as room preferences, local dining

options, and tailored facilities and services can also enhance this personal touch, making guests

feel more connected to the destination. A key challenge for these resorts, and the broader

hospitality industry, is to maintain this human connection as an integral aspect of the service

experience, even when faced with limitations.

One of the key gaps in current research is understanding how small and medium-sized resorts

in specific regions, such as Misamis Oriental, can overcome budgetary and operational

constraints to offer truly personalized services. While larger resorts may have more resources to

provide luxury experiences, smaller establishments must find creative ways to meet guest

expectations while maintaining efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Working together with local

businesses and engaging the community can create unique experiences that improve guest

satisfaction while keeping costs manageable.

By addressing this gap, the study aims to provide insights into how resorts in this region can

focus on personal engagement to enhance guest experiences. The research emphasizes that

personalization in hospitality is essential for building guest loyalty, motivating repeat visits, and

generating positive recommendations. Hospitality businesses can enhance guest satisfaction and

performance by prioritizing genuine interactions and understanding individual guest preferences,

especially in competitive environments.

Theoretical Framework

Tailoring hospitality is an effective strategy that utilizes guest preferences to improve

experiences and promote corporate growth. This framework emphasizes the key principles,

essential elements, and benefits of this approach. Resorts can improve guest experiences and

build loyalty by using technology, accepting innovative practices, and focusing on customer

needs.

The researchers of "Tailoring Hospitality: Leveraging Guest Preferences to Improve

Experiences" examine the enhancement of hospitality through the customization of experiences

based on the preferences of each guest. They investigate methods to increase satisfaction and

cultivate loyalty by analyzing guest preferences. The researchers will identify various techniques

for gathering guest feedback and evaluate how this information can be used to enhance service

quality. The objective of this study is to provide hospitality professionals with actionable insights

for personalizing guest experiences. According to Lilyana Bardukova (2023), personalization and

customization, driven by data-informed experiences, loyalty programs, and targeted marketing,

play a crucial role in improving guest satisfaction. Hotels are urged to adapt to emerging trends to

maintain competitiveness in the changing hospitality environment.

This chapter offers a comprehensive guide for implementing personalized strategies within the

hospitality sector. Lodging establishments can enhance the guest experience by recognizing

individual preferences, using technology, effectively training staff, and placing a strong emphasis

on customer needs.
Theoretical Framework

This research is based on "Navigating the Hospitality Horizon: Current Trends and Strategies

for Customer Attraction and Retention in the Hotel Industry," authored by Lilyana Bardukova in

2023. The theory emphasizes the essential importance of innovative strategies in improving guest

experiences and cultivating brand loyalty within the ever-changing hospitality sector. Important

elements of this framework encompass technological advancements, sustainability efforts,

personalization and customization, and health and safety protocols. Through the application of

this framework, this study seeks to investigate how resorts in Misamis Oriental can successfully

implement these strategies to improve guest experiences. The results will add to the current body

of knowledge by providing a comprehensive perspective on contemporary trends and practices in

the hotel industry, thereby assisting practitioners in making knowledgeable decisions and

adapting proactively to the shifting environment.
