Speed Lab
This lab will measure your speeds doing different activities. For most activities you will use the
already marked off distance of 25 meters. The formula you will use to find the speed is
SPEED = DISTANCE / TIME. Distance will be in meters and time will be in seconds.
EXAMPLE: Walking: Use the stopwatch on your iPad (or phone) to record how long it takes
you to WALK 25 meters. Record this data in the chart under time. Then, calculate your speed
by using the speed formula. Round any decimals to the hundredths place (2 decimal places).
Show all of your work in the space under the chart.
Distance (meters) Time (seconds) Speed (Distance / Time)
Trial 1 25 meters 8.51 seconds 2.94 m/s
Trial 2 25 meters 9.12 seconds 2.74 m/s
Trial 3 25 meters 9.56 seconds 2.62 m/s
Show your work:
Trial 1: 25 meters / 8.51 seconds = 2.94 m/s
Trial 2: 25 meters / 9.12 seconds = 2.74 m/s
Trial 3: 25 meters / 9.56 seconds = 2.62 m/s
Average of the three trials:
add up the three distances
add up the three times
divide total distance by total time (total distance / total time)
Show your average time work here:
Trial 1: 8.51 seconds + Trial 2 9.12 seconds + Trial 3 9.56 seconds = 27.19 total
seconds.
27.19 seconds / 3 trials = 9.06 seconds (round to two decimal places).
Walking: Use the stopwatch on your iPad (or phone) to record how long it takes you to WALK
25 meters. Record this data in the chart under time. Then, calculate your speed by using the
speed formula. Round any decimals to the hundredths place (2 decimal places). Show all of
your work in the space under the chart.

Ball Throw: For this activity, we will find the speed of a ball you throw. This will not be 100%
accurate, but it will be fun to try. Use the stopwatch on your iPad (or phone) to record how long
it takes the ball to travel 25 meters.
There will be cones placed on the ground. Stand behind the cones and throw a ball at the net.
Record the time it takes to reach the net. Stop your timer when the ball hits the net. Record this
data in the chart under time. Then, calculate your speed by using the speed formula. Round any
decimals to the hundredths place (2 decimal places). Show all of your work in the space under
