String Auditions – Moderator Script

1. Student Arrival & Setup

o As students enter, take their score sheet and write their
audition number on both the moderator worksheet and student
sheet (if blank). Keep this number confidential to ensure
anonymity.
2. Audition Order
o For viola, cello, and bass, instruct students to perform in this
order: Scales, Solo 1, Solo 2, Sight Reading.
3. Scales
o Set the metronome to quarter note = 120 (bass scales at
quarter note = 96) and give 4 beats before they start.
4. Solo Performances
o After scales, students will perform Solo 1 and then Solo 2. Allow
time to transition between pieces.
5. Sight Reading
o After Solo 2, place the sight-reading material on the stand. Give
the student 30 seconds to review, then instruct them to begin.
6. Closing the Audition
o After the sight reading, escort the student out, close the door,
and record the judges’ scores on the student’s sheet. Total the
scores, using a calculator if needed, and place the score sheet
face down.
7. Transition to Next Student
o Bring in the next student and repeat the same process. Confirm
the student’s name and number, ensuring they have all required
materials.
8. Music Availability
o Ensure students who don’t have their own copies of music
(scales, solos, sight reading) have access to extras.
