Exercise 1
Turn the following present tense sentences from active to
passive voice:
1. Simon teaches children the art of water colour painting.
Ans : The art of water colour painting is taught by Simon to the
children.
2. We have donated a variety of books for the library.
Ans: A variety of books have been donated by us to the library.
3. The captain always encourages us to do our best.
Ans: We are always encouraged to do our best by the captain.
4. Rehman wants to play in the One Day Matches against Sri Lanka.
Ans: It is desired by Rehman to play in One Day Matches against Sri
Lanka.
5. What does the company charge as a fee for this course?
Ans: What is the fee charged by the company for this course?
6. Has someone seen my new bag?
Ans: Has my new bag been seen by someone?
7. Is she still working in this office?
Ans: Is work still being done by her in the office?
8. You must help the poor.
Ans: The poor must be helped by you.
9. Everyone laughed at the poor beggar.
Ans: The poor beggar was laughed at by everyone.
10. The women are praying in the temple.
Ans: Prayers are being said by the women in the temples.
Exercise 2
The following sentences are in the Past tense Active Voice. Turn them
from Active to Passive.
1. My mother knitted this cardigan for me.
Ans:This cardigan was knitted by my mother for me.
2. The villagers had lost all their possessions during the floods.
Ans:All their possessions had been lost by the villagers in the flood.
3. Did you forget to post this letter yesterday?
Ans:Was posting this letter forgotten by you yesterday?
4. The children were helping the teacher in decorating the class.
Ans:The teacher was being helped by the children in decorating the
class.
5. Did the police stop the strikers from doing damage to public property?
Ans:Were the strikers stopped by the police from doing damage to
public property?
6. Why did you frighten the horse?
Ans:Why was the horse frightened by you?
7. Someone stole my suitcase from the railway compartment.
Ans:My suitcase was stolen by someone from the railway
compartment.
8. He did not tell the members about the meeting on time.
Ans:The members were not told about the meeting on time.
9. She asked me to shut the door and lock it properly.
Ans: I was asked by her to shut and lock the door properly.
10. They believed that the experiment failed because of bad
planning.
Ans:It was believed by them that the failure of the experiment was
due to bad planning.

Fill in the blanks with the Passive form of the verbs in the future
tense.

Put the verbs in brackets into the correct passive form.

Rewrite the following passage in the passive voice in the Past tense.
Answers:
A terrible train accident was witnessed by the villagers last night. The fire,
involving fire bogies, was fought by the fire brigade, while the survivors
were rescued by ambulances. All the survivors were taken to the hospital
by the ambulances. The cause of the accident was still not known. A full
investigation had been ordered by the government. The survivors had
already been interviewed by the Newspaper & TV reporters. It was said by
them that there must be some eyewitnesses. The search was being
continued by the police and the reporters.

Rewrite the following passage in the passive form (Future tense).
Answers
An important announcement is going to be made by the government
tomorrow. All cars will be banned from entering Delhi by them. The cars will
be allowed to enter according to their serial NUmbers. Entry of cars ending
in numbers 123 will not be allowed on Mondays, 456 on Tuesday, 678 on
Wednesday and so on. The people would be helped by this as their health
is being seriously affected by pollution. Plans are being made by the
government for a new environmental police force. After all something must
be done by them before it is too late.
Exercise 7 Change the following sentences into the passive form.

Ans:One’s promises must be kept.
2. The police may have caught the culprit by now,
Ans:The culprit might have been caught by the police by now.

Ans:Your duty has to be done by you, come what may.

9. We could hear the noise of the drums from a distance.
Ans: The noise of the drums could be heard by us from a distance.
10. Why couldn't you complete the building in the stipulated time?
Ans: Why couldn’t the building be completed by you in the stipulated
time?
Exercise 8 Change from Active to Passive.
1. Shut the door.
Ans: The door should be shut.
2. Do not tell him anything about our new plan.
Ans: Nothing should be told to him about our new plan.
3. Spare no efforts in completing this assignments.
Ans: No efforts should be spared in completing this assignment.
4. Clear all the dues by the end of this week.
