C. 16 m s-1 10 m s-1
D. 16 m s-1 16 m s-1

2. The length of a rod is measured using part of a metre rule that is graduated in millimetres, as shown below.

Which one of the following is the measurement, with its uncertainty, of the length of the rod?

A. 5 ± 0.1 cm B. 5 ± 0.2 cm C. 5.0 ± 0.1 cm D. 5.0 ± 0.2 cm

3. A body starting from rest moves along a straight-line under the action of a constant acceleration. After
travelling a distance d the speed of the body is v.

𝑑
The speed of the body when it has travelled a distance 2 from its initial position is

𝑣 𝑣 𝑣 𝑣
A. B. C. D.
4 2 √2 2√2

4. Samantha walks along a horizontal path in the direction shown. The curved part of the path is a semi-
circle.

The magnitude of her displacement from point P to point Q is approximately.

A. 2 m B. 4 m C. 6 m D. 8 m

5. The graph shows the acceleration a of an object as time t varies. Assuming the object started from rest.

What is the magnitude of the change in the displacement of the object between 2 and 4 seconds?

A. 40 m B. 10 m C. 20 m D. 30 m
6. The graph shows the variation of the acceleration a with time t of an object moving in a straight line.

Which graph shows the variation of the velocity v of the object with time t?

7. A particle is projected horizontally with speed v from a height H. It lands a horizontal distance R from the
point of launch as shown in the diagram below.

A second particle is projected horizontally from the same height with speed 2v. Neglecting air resistance the
horizontal distance travelled by this particle is

A. R. B. √2𝑅. C. 2R. D. 4R.

8. Joseph runs along a long straight track. The variation of his speed v with time t is shown below.

After 25 seconds Joseph has run 200m. Which of the following is correct at 25 seconds?

Instantaneous speed / m s-1 Average speed / m s-1

A. 8 m s-1 8 m s-1
B. 8 m s-1 10 m s-1
C. 10 m s-1 8 m s-1
D. 10m s-1 10m s-1

9. The graph shows how the position of an object varies with time in the interval from 0 to 3s.

At which point does the instantaneous speed of the object equal its average speed over the interval from 0 to 3s?
10. A stone is thrown from O at an angle to the horizontal. Which sketch below best shows the path of the
stone when air resistance is not neglected? On each sketch, the broken line shows the path for the same
stone in a vacuum.
Section (B):

Part (1): Rocket Motion:

A sphere is projected horizontally. The sphere is photographed at intervals of 0.10s. The images of the sphere are
shown against a grid on the diagram. Air resistance is negligible.
(a) Use data from the diagram to determine the acceleration of free fall. [3]

(b) Determine the speed of the sphere 1.2s after release. [5]

(c) On the grid, draw the path of the sphere assuming air resistance is not negligible. [2]
Part (2): Data-based question [optional for extra marks]

A student investigates how the period T of a simple pendulum varies with the maximum speed v of the pendulum’s
bob by releasing the pendulum from rest from different initial angles. A graph of the variation of T with v is
plotted.

(a) Suggest, by reference to the graph, why it is unlikely that the relationship between T and v is linear. [1]

(b) Determine the fractional uncertainty in v when T = 2.115s, correct to one significant figure. [2]
(c) The student hypothesizes that the relationship between T and v is T = a + bv2, where a and b are constants.
To verify this hypothesis a graph showing the variation of T with v2 is plotted. The graph shows the data
and the line of best fit.

i) Determine b, giving an appropriate unit for b. [3]

ii) State the point a from the graph. [1]
