Metamorphic Rock Petrography

Name :
Sample :

General Textural Characteristics

Schist, displays a well-developed schistosity such that the rock will split on a scale <1 cm
Gneiss, displays a poorly-developed schistosity or a well-developed schistosity that is present in spaced
zones so that the rock will split on a scale >1cm
Phyllitic, displays very fine grains and shiny, and crenulated (crinkled) surfaces
Slaty, displays very fine grains and parallel foliation
Augen, characterized by eye-shaped; larger grain clusters enclosed in a finer-grained matrix
Crenulation, displays symmetric or asymmetric crenulation cleavage
Mylonitic, displays original textures by predominantly plastic flow due to dynamic recrystallization
Lepidoblastic, displays platy or tabular minerals and produce a planar fabric
Granoblastic, equigranular texture, the minerals do not show a strong tendency to develop
their characteristic crystal shape, but are equant, with fairly uniform grain size and straight or
tsmoothly-curved boundaries.
Mesh, serpentine veins contain two parallel series of fibrous material separated by a black band
of minute magnetite aggregates.
Mica Fish, elongate lozenge or lens-shaped single crystals, which are common in mylonites
Nematoblastic, which prismatic minerals such as sillimanite or amphiboles are orientated to
produce a linear fabric (a L-fabric).
Porphyroblastic, relatively large single crystals, which formed by metamorphic growth in a
more fine-grained matrix
Porphyroclastic, single crystals of a size exceeding the mean grain size in the surrounding
matrix and typical for mylonites.
