1. Read the text about being helpful and kind, and then answer the questions that follow :
It was a bright and sunny morning. On her way to school, Lily noticed an elderly woman struggling with
heavy shopping bags. Lily immediately rushed over to help her carry the bags. The elderly woman smiled
and said, "You are so generous, dear!"
As Lily continued walking she saw a young girl who had lost her way. The girl looked frightened and
confused. Lily approached her calmly and offered to guide her to her destination. The girl was relieved
and thanked Lily, saying, "You are so kind!"
Later, Lily spotted a friend who had forgotten her lunch at home. Lily offered to share her own lunch
with her friend. Her friend was very grateful and said, "You are always so considerate, Lily!"
At school, Lily participated actively in class and helped her classmates with their group project. Her
teacher praised her, saying, "You are very cooperative and a great team player."
After school, Lily went to the park where she saw a young boy who was having trouble fixing his bicycle.
She stopped to assist him, and together they managed to get the bike working. The boy thanked her with a
smile, saying, "You are very helpful!" [cvV¨eB‡qi Experience 7.1 Gi Av‡jv‡K]

Only a dad with a brood of four,
One of ten million men or more
Plodding along in the daily strife,
Bearing the whips and the scorns of life,
With never a whimper of pain or hate,
For the sake of those who at home await.

Merely one of the surging crowd
Toiling, striving from day to day,
Facing whatever may come his way,
Silent whenever the harsh condemn,
And bearing it all for the love of them.

1. Read the text about cultural and social behavioural similarities and dissimilarities between
Bangladesh and the United States, and answer the questions that follow :
Bangladesh and the United States have both cultural similarities and differences in familial, social, and
behavioural aspects.
In Bangladesh, family is central to life. Extended families often live together or close by, and strong
family bonds are emphasized. Respect for elders and family traditions is highly valued. Social

their extended families, focusing on individuals achievements and personal space. Social interactions can be
more casual and informal, with a greater emphasis on personal freedom and self-expression.

them were united, they were saved from their enemy.
Not even the king of the Jungle, “The Lion,” dared to approach them. In the same forest, there lived a
cunning leopard. He used to observe the bulls every day and licked his lips. The leopard wanted to eat all
of them but was quite afraid. He thought for a while and soon made an evil plan to divide them.
The leopard called his close friend Jackal for help. The leopard sent the jackal to the four bulls so that he
could make them fight with each other. The jackal was successful in creating bad blood among them.
Immediately, he ran to give good news to the leopard.
As a result, each of the four bulls started fighting against each other. Friendship of all four of them ended
up quarreling with each other and now they were not united like before. Seeing this, the hungry leopard
attacked one of the four bulls and shared it with the jackal as a reward. One after another, he killed and

We still live in the same farmhouse. We still enjoy the peace of the countryside and the quiet of the
woods, but our life is very different from that of our grandparents. Why is this? What has made our
life so different? The reason is, of course, that discoveries and inventions made since their time have
immensely extended the range of our eyes and ears. One might almost claim that these inventions

1. Read the text and answer the questions that follow :
Greetings vary widely worldwide, ranging from respectful handshakes to warm embraces. It is essential
to recognize the various forms of welcome differentiating from each country down to each person. In the
United States, a handshake is a familiar layout of acknowledgement, whereas in Japan, bowing is a
traditional greeting. In Western cultures, a handshake is often perceived as trustworthy and assertiveness.
But, a firm handshake in China could be considered a sign of aggression.
Culture is one of the many aspects that determine each welcome style. In some cultures, it is considered
impolite to refrain from making eye contact while engaging in conversation because they feel you are not
paying attention to them. They believe maintaining eye contact during a conversation indicates that you
are listening, sympathetic, and willing to comprehend the other person‟s point of view. In contrast,
making eye contact during conversation is considered boldness or sometimes arrogance.
Verbal dialogue might occasionally fade your sensations. Hence, in different cultures, physical touch is a
familiar way of meeting that brings people closer together. Whether you are holding hands, kissing on
cheeks or hugging, it helps people express warmth and connection. Even without a hug, using our arms to
demonstrate warmth can leave a positive impression. Regardless, there is rigid avoidance of physical
contact with others in other cultures. Its causes could be cultural, religious, societal, or historical.

now that I've decided to stop loving her.
Cornwall and Albany (husbands of Goneril and Regan), you divide Cornelia's third of my
kingdom between you. Let her marry her pride, which she calls "honesty." I now give the two

power, responsibility, and incomeis now yours, my beloved sons-in-law. To confirm this,
take this crown and share it between you. [He gives CORNWALL and ALBANY the crown]

The Schoolboy
I love to rise in a summer morn,
When the birds sing on every tree;
The distant huntsman winds his horn,
And the skylark sings with me :
O what sweet company!
But to go to school in a summer morn,
O it drives all joy away!
Under a cruel eye outworn,
The little ones spend the day
In sighing and dismay.
Ah then at times I drooping sit,
And spend many an anxious hour;
Nor in my book can I take delight,
Nor sit in learning's bower,
Worn through with the dreary shower.
How can the bird that is born for joy
Sit in a cage and sing?
How can a child, when fears annoy,
But droop his tender wing,
And forget his youthful spring!
O father and mother if buds are nipped,
And blossoms blown away;
And if the tender plants are stripped
Of their joy in the springing day,
By sorrow and care's dismay,
How shall the summer arise in joy,
Or the summer fruits appear?
Or how shall we gather what griefs destroy,
Or bless the mellowing year,
When the blasts of winter appear?

1. Read the text about importance of togetherness, and answer the questions that follow.
We all need each other to progress, both in our personal lives and in our professional lives. We are all here
together and it is important to understand that we can all make progress together if we take the time to support
one another. Togetherness is essential for us to reach our goals, whether big or small.
By coming together and pooling our resources, we can tackle bigger tasks and overcome any obstacle.
When we come together as a unit, we can achieve more than any of us could on our own. Togetherness allows
us to share ideas, collaborate on projects, and brainstorm solutions to difficult problems.
Our strengths are amplified when we combine them with the strengths of others. We can become better
communicators, thinkers, and problem solvers when we learn to work together.
Togetherness also helps us develop a sense of community and connectedness. We can connect with others on a
deeper level and build relationships that will last a lifetime.
When we come together and share experiences, we gain empathy and understanding for one another. This
helps us better understand the world around us and how our actions can impact others.
Ultimately, togetherness gives us the strength and support we need to succeed. It allows us to come together
and accomplish great things that would otherwise be impossible. Working together is essential for success,
both in our personal lives and in our professional lives. [cvV¨eB‡qi Experience 15.6 Gi Av‡jv‡K]

Long ago, a young man who lived in a village, found his life full of problems and sufferings. Quarrels,
ill-feelings, jealousy, enmity - all were part of everyday life there. So he left his house and went to a
jungle to live by himself. There he made a nice little hut with wood, bamboo and reeds. "Ah, how happy I
am here!" said the man to himself.
But one day he found some mice in his hut. The little creatures soon made holes in his blanket. So he
brought a cat to kill the mice. The cat needed milk. So he brought a cow. The cow needed grass and hay.
So he brought a cowhand.
The cowhand needed food. So he took a wife to cook meals. Then children were born to them, and the
man found himself again in a family.
So nobody can live alone, unless that person is either an angel or a devil. People need food, shelter,
companions and help. They need to look after each other. And if they live in a family or community, their
needs can be fulfilled. Hence living in society can make people good and happy citizens.
