Easy Experiment: Rising Tissue Paper

This fun experiment demonstrates how static electricity is created.

What you need:

- Scissors - Tissue paper - Wool sweater - Plastic comb

Steps:
1. Cut the tissue paper into small pieces. 2. Rub the comb against a wool sweater (or comb through your hair) around 10 times. 3. Hold the comb above the pieces of tissue paper. 4. The tissue paper will be pulled up by the charged comb.

Explanation:
By rubbing the comb against a wool sweater, or combing it through your hair repeatedly you are creating a charge of static electricity. The static is attracting the tissue paper and making it look like it is magically rising.

Easy Experiment: Volcanic Explosion


This simple project is a fun way to experience (on a small, less destructive scale) the power of a volcano.

What you need:

- Clear bottle with a slim neck (like a pop bottle) - Vinegar - Baking soda - Liquid dishwashing soap - Food coloring (red or whatever color you have on hand) - Big baking pan (like a cookie sheet) - Glass or mug - Cup measure - Funnel - Spoon

Steps:

1. Put the empty bottle in the middle of the baking pan (or cookie sheet). 2. Put baking soda into the bottle until it covers the bottom. 3. In a cup or mug combine cup of vinegar, two big drops of liquid dishwashing soap and a few drops of food coloring. 4. Using the funnel, pour the mixture into the bottle. 5. Stand back and watch as your volcano erupts over the bottle!

Explanation:
By combining the baking soda and the vinegar you are creating a chemical reaction. The vinegar and baking soda create carbon dioxide gas, the gas expands and escapes to the bottle opening, pushing the soap mixture with it. Sponsored Feature Top Games

Easy Experiments: Easy Salt Crystals


Make your own crystals with materials found in your house.

What you need:

- cup Epsom salts - cup water - Measuring cups - Shallow dish - Sponge

Steps:
1. Have an adult help you boil water. 2. Have an adult remove the water from heat. 3. Add the Epsom salts to the hot water and stir until dissolved 4. Put a sponge in a shallow dish and pour the mixture into the dish just enough to

cover the bottom. 5. Put the container in a safe, sunny place. As the water evaporates crystals will form.

Easy Experiments: Blasting Rockets


Create a chemical reaction between baking soda and vinegar and launch your own rocket (otherwise known as an empty film canister) into the sky!

What you need:

- Empty film canisters (if you dont have any at home, check with a local photo lab) - Baking soda - Vinegar - Measuring spoons

Steps:
1. Take the top off the film canister. 2. Pack the lid of the film canister with baking soda (make sure you pack it tightly). 3. Pour 2 teaspoons of vinegar into the film canister. 4. Carefully put the baking soda packed lid onto the film canister and snap the lid closed. 5. Turn the upside down, put it on the ground and stand back! 6. After a few seconds the canister will shoot up into the air.

Tip:

If your rocket fizzles and doesnt explode, try a different film canister maybe one with a tighter fitting lid. This experiment should be done outside to avoid making a mess and to give your rocket lots of room to explode!

Explanation:

The vinegar and baking soda combine to create a chemical reaction and produce carbon dioxide gas. Pressure builds up in the film canister until it cant hold the gas any longer. The lid pops off, the canister shoots up into the air and the gas and pressure are released.
