Deep Resolve –
Introduction

Deep Resolve is an AI-powered advanced image reconstruction

technology with the following variants: 6

• Deep Resolve Gain

• Deep Resolve Sharp

Deep Resolve Gain reduces noise with intelligent denoising,

resulting in a higher signal-to-noise ratio. Deep Resolve Sharp is a
deep learning algorithm and increases the perceived sharpness.

Please note: In this Job Aid, the focus will be on some application
strategies of Deep Resolve. These strategies depend on the body
region examined, the coil, and the contrast medium. The
strategies can also be combined with each other.

Deep Resolve Protocol Overview

Depending on the SNR level of the original protocol

or the image quality that you want to achieve, you
can select between the following combinations of
Deep Resolve (DR):

1. Deep Resolve Gain: suppression of locally

varying noise combined by intelligent denoising

2. Deep Resolve Gain and Deep Resolve Sharp:

suppression of locally varying noise combined
with deep-learning-based increase of resolution
and sharpness

Deep Resolve –
Deep Resolve Protocol Transformation

How to transform a protocol into a Deep Resolve protocol

1. Open the Dot Cockpit and select from the Siemens tree a
specific region, such as t-spine.
2. Click on the Edit button and select a protocol.
3. Under the Resolution parameters card, click on the
Acceleration card.
4. In the Advanced Reconstruction drop-down menu, select
the option Deep Resolve.
5. Deep Resolve Gain and Sharp can only be combined with
some specific types of image filters. The other filters
might get deactivated. If, therefore, additional changes
are required, the Scan Assistant window opens and
shows what can be combined with Deep Resolve.
6. Select OK to close the window and accept the changes.
7. Select Save to save the changes.

Deep Resolve –
Deep Resolve Gain (DR Gain)

1. After the protocol transformation, you can start the

examination.

2. After Deep Resolve has been activated, you can adjust the
denoising strength and the edge enhancement to fine-tune the
effect of Deep Resolve Gain.

3. Under the Resolution parameters card, select the Acceleration

card.

4. Click on the dots next to the drop-down menu and adjust the
6
following fields in the Deep Resolve window:
• Denoising Strength: low (=1) to high (=8)
• Edge Enhancement: low (=1) to high (=5)
Please change the default values only if it is required.

Deep Resolve Gain (DR Gain)

5. Deep Resolve Sharp is automatically activated if the license is

available on your system. In order to use the pure Deep 6

Resolve Gain protocols, you need to remove the checkmark

from the Deep Resolve Sharp checkbox and deactivate
interpolation.

6. To deactivate interpolation, select under the Resolution

parameters card the Common card and remove the checkmark
from the Interpolation checkbox.

7. The clinical images acquired with DR Gain contain the

abbreviation: DRG.

a) How to increase image quality

Recommended original protocol SNR level: low

• Select <Deep Resolve> in the drop-down menu.

• Open the Deep Resolve window by clicking on the dots next to

the drop-down menu. Remove the checkmark from the Deep
Resolve Sharp field.

• Keep the default values in the Deep Resolve window.

6

• The clinical images are reconstructed with a higher SNR.

Please note: In some cases using DR Gain may lead to a decrease in

the perceived image sharpness. Applying edge enhancement and
increasing the image resolution can be helpful here.

b) How to reduce scan time

Recommended original protocol SNR level: normal

By turning a protocol with a normal SNR into a DR Gain protocol, you can
reduce the scan time with comparable image quality.

The options to reduce the scan time are as follows:

1. If you have an average value of more than one, decrease the value of
the Averages by clicking on the arrow in the Routine task card.

2. Increase the PAT factor by selecting a higher value for the parameter
Acceleration Factor PE under the Acceleration card.

Please note: These adjustments can cause some artifacts to become

more severe, e.g. due to the lack of averaging of regular movements such
as the blood flow.

c) How to reduce image artifacts

Protocols which are affected by either susceptibility artifacts or

by image distortions around metal implants.

1. In order to improve the image quality, you can increase the

bandwidth.
2. In the Sequence task card, adjust the value of the Bandwidth
by clicking on the arrow.
3. Increasing the bandwidth renders the protocol more robust
against artifacts - however a higher bandwidth also
introduces additional noise. This lower SNR can be
compensated by using DR Gain.

Deep Resolve –
Deep Resolve Sharp (DRS)

By activating Deep Resolve, Deep Resolve Sharp

is also automatically activated if you have
purchased the Deep Resolve Sharp license.
6
Please be aware that interpolation is also
automatically selected if you enable Deep
Resolve Sharp (DRS). Deep Resolve Sharp only
unveils its full potential with Interpolation
activated.

Please note: Deep Resolve Sharp may enhance

existing but hidden artefacts and bring back a little
bit of noise.

set that is generated with DRG, without DRG and also with
modified DRG parameterization.

Under certain circumstances data sets that are generated

without DRG cannot be reconstructed with a RetroRecon.

Deep Resolve Gain and Sharp – Gibbs ringing

Gibbs ringing is a well-known artifact that affects reconstruction

of images with discontinuities.

The Gibbs ringing artifact manifests itself at the boundaries of

tissues, making it difficult to determine the structure of e.g. the
brain tissue.

With Deep Resolve Gain and Sharp these artifacts can be

reduced.
