Digital literacy is a significant element of the curriculum, as evidenced by the focus on both theoretical understanding and practical skills. Students learn about the basics of desktop management, email etiquette, and security issues like handling malware and using antivirus tools. The use of word processors for text work and photo editing tools like Windows Live Photo Gallery for media handling enhances their digital skills. Additionally, projects involving spreadsheets and presentation tools equip students with essential competencies for modern digital environments .

Project work assignments are designed to enhance student learning by requiring the application of learned skills across different contexts—akin to real-world scenarios. For example, the task to write an article about their city involves composition skills, image formatting, and printing capabilities, reinforcing concepts from different parts of the curriculum. Group work on subjects like spreadsheets and presentations in topics like the solar system encourages collaboration, critical thinking, and the practical application of technology and concepts. These projects facilitate experiential learning, fostering both cognitive and social skills .

Both terms share a focus on integrating theory with practical application, using project work to solidify concepts. The first term emphasizes fundamental skills like desktop management, file handling, and safe computing, alongside word processing and online communication. The second term builds on these foundations, shifting toward presentation skills with tools such as PowerPoint, as well as advanced number manipulation with spreadsheets. The continuity lies in the integration of technology throughout, while the progression is marked by a shift from general computer skills to advanced applications like data presentation and media handling .

The curriculum integrates media and software tools by incorporating projects and exercises that require the students to actively use them. For example, students are tasked with creating sound clips and using Windows Live Photo Gallery to view, edit, and apply photo effects. In the second term, students learn to add transitions, animations, and media files to presentations, thereby not only familiarizing themselves with different software tools but also applying their learning in creative projects like student group presentations on space and the solar system. Lessons also cover spreadsheet use for numerical handling .

The emphasis on computer safety is evident in the curriculum through specific topics focused on malware understanding and antivirus usage. Students learn what malware is, the importance of mitigating security risks, and how to use and update antivirus software. These lessons are combined with practical implementation, ensuring that students can apply safety measures effectively. Digital literacy is thus intertwined with cyber safety education, equipping students with fundamental skills to navigate digital environments securely .

Practical implementation in the Class 5 computer studies curriculum is emphasized through a dual-lesson structure where one lesson explains the topic and another focuses on practical application. Every lesson involves practical demonstrations using gadgets. There are provisions for worksheets, relevant project work, and quarterly concept revisions. For teachers, 'Digital World Book 3' is available as a reference. Additionally, students participate in project work, like creating articles and presentations, which provides hands-on experiences .

The curriculum prepares students by introducing them to spreadsheets and Microsoft Excel, involving demonstrations of cells, columns, and rows. Students practice inserting text and numbers, and learn essential mathematical operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Project work further solidifies these skills by having students create data-driven projects, such as recording population data of countries within a continent. This hands-on experience with real data ensures students understand both the functional and practical applications of spreadsheet software .

The school uses a varied instructional approach combining theoretical lessons with practical application. Each topic is first explained in class followed by practical implementation. This dual approach helps reinforce understanding. Demonstrations using tools like smart boards make abstracts concrete. The use of worksheets and notebook questions consolidates learning. Project work like writing an article or creating a presentation helps in revising and applying concepts. Group activities promote collaboration while practical work engages students actively, fostering better retention .

The lesson planning guidelines foster structured teaching by emphasizing a balance between theoretical instruction and practical application. Each topic is designed to include class-based explanation and a practical session, ensuring immediate application and understanding. The use of smart boards for demonstrations adds an interactive dimension. Worksheets and notebook exercises serve as reinforcement tools, while project and practical work solidify experiential learning. Overall, this structured approach ensures comprehensive understanding and retention of computer skills .

The main components and targets for the first term include foundational topics such as learning about 'My Desktop', creating and managing shortcuts, understanding compressed files and folders, and basic computer safety measures involving malware and antivirus usage. Practical skills in managing text—like inserting and formatting borders, and working with images within Word documents—are emphasized. The curriculum also covers email communication skills, including managing contacts and writing perfect emails. Among the educational strategies, lessons incorporate practical demonstrations using devices like smart boards, along with worksheets, project work, and revision exercises to reinforce student understanding .
