Abstract
Mutual fund in Indian context is a challengeable phenomenon. It has attained commanding
heights in the financial scenario of India. The main focus of this study is, to review about the
mutual fund investment policies and strategies used in previous years by various researchers.
For this purpose, 7 studies on mutual fund review in this paper. The previous studies have
taken, which conducted in between 1965 to 2012. The main aim of the paper is to concentrate
on the various studies conducted on mutual funds in India and outside India. The Government
of India introduced economic reforms in the field of trade, industry and commerce so as to
bring about the integration of the Indian economy with the global economy. With the growth
of the economy and the capital market in India, the size of investors has also increased rapidly.
The capital market in India has experienced remarkable developments in the past few years.
New innovative instruments and institutions have emerged which have been playing the role
of financial intermediaries. With the emphasis on increase in domestic savings and
improvement in deployment of investment through markets, the need and scope for mutual
fund operation has increased tremendously. As a result, from the investor’s point of view, it is
important not only to know how the portfolio managers perform, but also to understand
investment policies. Similarly, at the macro level it is worth examining the performance of fund
managers as a whole to see whether they provide value added to portfolio or they are just full
benefits from investors. And the superior performance in the past does not necessarily mean
that it will continue into the future. This is because superior performance may be due to either
a manager’s skill or good luck. Therefore, it is interesting to understand the characteristics of
funds and to know the performance and this helps investors to understand how to select their
schemes. Thus, the involvement of mutual funds in the transformation of Indian economy has
made it urgent to view their services not only as financial intermediary but also as pace setter
as they are playing a significant role in spreading equity culture. In this context, close
monitoring and evaluation of mutual funds has become essential for fund managers to make
this instrument as the strongest and most preferred instrument in Indian capital market in the
coming years.
Index terms: mutual fund, equity, macro, investors.
I. INTRODUCTION
Mutual fund is a professionally managed investment fund that pools money from many
investors to purchase securities. The term is typically used in the United States, Canada,
and India, while similar structures across the globe include the SICAV in Europe ('investment
company with variable capital) and open-ended investment company (OEIC) in the UK.
Mutual funds are often classified by their principal investments: money market funds, bond
or fixed income funds, stock or equity funds, or hybrid funds.[1] Funds may also be
categorized as index funds, which are passively managed funds that track the performance of
an index, such as a stock market index or bond market index, or actively managed funds,
which seek to outperform stock market indices but generally charge higher fees. Primary
structures of mutual funds are open-end funds, closed-end funds, unit investment trusts.
Open- end funds are purchased from or sold to the issuer at the net asset value of each share
as of the close of the trading day in which the order was placed, as long as the order was
placed within a specified period before the close of trading. They can be traded directly with
the issuer. Mutual funds have advantages and disadvantages compared to direct investing in
individual securities. The advantages of mutual funds include economies of scale,
diversification, liquidity, and professional management. However, these come with mutual
fund fees and expenses. Mutual funds are regulated by governmental bodies and are required
to publish information including performance, comparison of performance to benchmarks,
fees charged, and securities held. A single mutual fund may have several share classes by
which larger investors pay lower fees.
Investment performance is the return on an investment portfolio. The investment portfolio
can contain a single asset or multiple assets. The investment performance is measured over a
specific period of time and in a specific currency. Investors often distinguish different types
of return. One is the distinction between the total return and the price return, where the
former takes into account income (interest and dividends), whereas the latter only takes into
account capital appreciation. Another distinction is between net and gross return. The 'pure'
net return to the investor is the return inclusive of all fees, expenses, and taxes, whereas the
'pure' gross return is the return before all fees, expenses, and taxes. As a result, gross returns
will be greater than net returns. Various variations between these two extremes exist. Which
return one looks at depends on what one is trying to measure. For example, if one wishes to
measure the ability of an investment manager to add value, then the return net of transaction
expenses, but gross of all other fees, expenses, and taxes is an appropriate measure to look at
since fees, expenses, and taxes other than transaction expenses are often outside the control of
the investment manager. Another important distinction is between the money-weighted return
and the time-weighted return. The former is appropriate if the manager determines the timing
of inflows in or outflows from the portfolio. The latter is appropriate when the manager is not
responsible for the timing of cash inflows into and cash outflows from the portfolio.
II. METHODOLOGY
A. An Empirical Analysis on Performance Evaluation of Mutual Funds in India: A study on
Equity Linked Savings Schemes -Dr. Naliniprava Tripathy(2004)
Reform process shows waves of changes in savings and investment behavior. This adds a
new dimension to the growth of the financial sector. The mutual fund (MF) industry in
general and in particular continues to change.
In early 1990s , during this time, mutual funds pooled huge investments for the company
sector. It has grown and developed various mutual fund products in the Indian capital market.
This provens to be one of the most catalytic tools in generating significant investments. In the
case of growth of capital markets, close monitoring and evaluation of investment funds has
become essential. Therefore, this study evaluates the performance of 31 taxes. From 1994-
1995 to 2001-2002, He planned a program in India. This paper examined investment
performance of Indian mutual funds on 6 key performance indicators. Results show surveyed
fund managers did not harvest successfully returns while outperforming the market or
ensuring efficient portfolio diversification. In this paper, they have examined the investment
performance of Indian mutual funds from six perspectives.
The empirical results reported here did not support this hypothesis adopted in the study. Only
one scheme follows linear relationship between return and risk. All other schemes did not
show this relationship.
Above only have the average beta of 13 systems in total, indicating that mutual funds in
return are very unstable. About 10 systems have Treynor measurements and sharp measures.
However, the four schemes performed well in terms of: Systematic risk, but not related to
overall risk. After the Jensen countermeasures, 13A schema has a positive alpha value that
indicates good schema performance.
Warehouse Choice is one of the most important characteristics of a fund manager. Selectivity
Techniques bring out stock-picking skills and their rewards. In the case of analysis of
applying the Fama scale, they saw that the returns from decentralization are very small. 9 out
of 31 schemes have higher returns due to selectivity alone. The system shows a lack of net
selectivity and diversity. So they found the right balance. No observed between selectivity
and diversification. This is the fund manager's fault. Fund selectivity and poor investment
planning are the insights understood in this analysis.

C. Performance evaluation of Islamic mutual funds in Malaysia based on asset portfolio
– Yuzi. A(2012)
The purpose of this study is to assess the return performance of Malaysian Islamic
Mutual Funds across four investment portfolios. Stocks, Liabilities, Financial Markets, Asset
Allocation. Using Sharpe Ratio and Adjusted Sharpe Ratio, Trainer & Jensen Index and
Modigliani Index, using his two market benchmarks, the Kuala Lumpur Composite Index
(KLCI), average daily returns for each type of mutual fund. In the case of EMAS Shariah
Index for Malaysia. (FBMS), the comparison period is divided into three parts. Between 2001
and 2006, i.e., Before the global financial crisis, during the 2007-2008 crisis, and after the
2009-2010 crisis indicates that all types of asset portfolios are doing well. However, during
the global financial crisis, Islamic mutual funds performed well in the money market
compared to other types of asset portfolios. Moreover, as in 2010, Islamic mutual funds of all
kinds outperformed market benchmarks. Only Islamic bonds and money market mutual funds
underperformed from 2001 to 2006. The results provide useful information for investors and
market participants when choosing mutual funds and considering investing in bull or bear
markets. The purpose of this study is to examine the performance of different types of Islamic
investment funds using the risk-adjusted performance indicators Sharpe Ratio, Adjusted
Sharpe Ratio, Trainer Ratio, and Modigliani Scale. Average daily returns for each portfolio
are calculated over 10 years and then over three time series. Pre-financial crisis (2001-2006),
global financial crisis (2007-2008), post-financial crisis (2009). divided into periods. -2010).
Both the pre-crisis and post-crisis periods are also called bull markets, but bear markets
prevail during crisis times.
Key results show good performance for all types of Islamic mutual funds using Sharpe and
adjusted Sharpe ratio. The firm's two Islamic funds, equity funds and midfield asset
allocation funds, have performed well despite the mixed market environment. In bear
markets, Islamic money market funds outperform other types of investment portfolios.
Comparing the two market portfolios, the results show that all types of Islamic funds
outperformed during and after the crisis. Equity and Asset Allocation Islamic MFs continue
to show resilience, posting positive performance throughout the decade. Although Islamic
MF underperformed in the pre-crisis financial markets, the fund performed best during the
recession compared to his KLCI and FBMS.
This result shows that all types of Islamic MFs were unaffected by market movements. In
particular, from 2007 to 2008, he said, during the global financial crisis, it was the crisis that
had the least impact. However, in terms of consistency of outperformance, it is the best fund
for allocations to equities and Islamic MFs. This evidence provides investors with important
information about the types of funds they can invest in in various market conditions and is
also used for diversification purposes.
D. Performance Evaluation of Indian Mutual Funds- Dr. S. Narayan Rao (2003)
In this paper, performance evaluation of Indian mutual funds in a bear market is carried out
by relative performance index, risk-reward analysis, Treynor ratio, Sharp ratio, Sharp
measure, Jensen measure and Fama measure. The data used is the monthly closing price
NAV. The data source is the website of the Mutual Funds Institute of India (AMFI). The
survey period was from September 1998 to April 2004 (bear season). To calculate the
Relative Performance Index, they started with a sample of 269 open schemes (out of a total of
433 schemes). Fifty-eight schemes were then used for further analysis after excluding funds
with returns below the risk-free return. The average monthly (logarithmic) return and risk for
the sample mutual fund system during the period were 0.59% and 7.10%, respectively, while
similar statistics for the market were 0.14% and 8.57% portfolio. The results of the
performance measurement show that most of the 58 sample mutual fund systems
outperformed their investments by generating excess returns over expected returns based on
both systematic risk premiums and scored overall risks. It shows that we were able to meet
the expectations of the house.
The purpose of this study was to assess the performance of Indian mutual funds. bear market
planning with relative performance index (RPI), risk reward analysis, Treynor's Ratio,
Sharpe's Ratio, Sharp's Measure, Jensen's Measure, and Fama's Measure. The conclusion is
that in case of RPI Analysis: Of the 269 systems, 49 were underperformers, 102 were per
performers, and 118 were underperformers. Mid-term debt funds were the best. some equity
funds was able to diversify risk and maximize returns in a bear market. Statistical risk reward
analysis were found that the average mutual fund has low unstructured risk and high overall
risk. From 58 twelve systems sampled gave negative returns and 46 systems gave positive
returns. 30 with excess returns over the risk-free rate. 32 of the 58 schemes were found with a
positive His-Treynor ratio and its limits. Negative β models were observed in four schemes.
In case of Sharp ratio, Thirty of the 58 schemes were found with positive sharp ratios and
their limits. A low-σ model was observed in two schemes. In case of Sharp scale, the
unsystematic or idiosyncratic risk of mutual funds is very high due to their low β value, less
correlated with the market, a fact confirmed by the low value of r2. In case of Jensen's scale,
thirty-five of the 58 systems provided a positive Jensen measure, compared with only 30
provided excess returns above the risk-free rate with low CAPM yields.
In case of Fama scale, positive beta compensation was found in 13 schemes for systematic
risk and 4 schemes for risk. unsystematic risk. However, we found 46 schemes generating net
revenue from Fama to selectivity. This deviation is again due to the fact that 58 out of 269
mutual funds part of the funds were allocated to the market during the bear period from
September 1998 to April 2002. Excess return over expected return were based on both
systematic risk premium and global risk.
E. PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF SELECTED EQUITY MUTUAL FUNDS IN
INDIA- Shivam Tripathi(2022)
In India, the capital market offers investors a variety of investment options, increasing
exposure to different industries and helping to ensure profitable returns. Among various
financial instruments, open-ended funds guarantee investors the lowest risk and the
highest return. The growth and development of various mutual fund products has proven
to be one of the most important catalytic tools for generating significant investment
growth in the capital markets. In this context, close monitoring and evaluation of mutual
funds has become essential. Therefore, choosing a profitable mutual fund to invest in is
very important. The study focuses on equity mutual funds offered for investment by
various fund companies in India.
This study primarily focuses on the performance of selected open-ended equity funds
(large-cap, mid-cap, and small-cap) in terms of risk-reward trade-offs. The main purpose
of this research work is to analyze the financial performance of selected open-ended fund
systems through statistical parameters such as (Jenson's alpha, beta, standard deviation
and Sharpe ratio). Researchers concluded that 10 out of 15 funds performed well in
highly volatile markets. The researchers found that investors should consider the fund's
risk metrics before investing. The results of this research study will be of great help to
investors in making future investment decisions. Selected 15 Equities from the above
performance analysis of her funds, we can see that 10 funds performed well and 5 funds
performed poorly during the study period.
NIFTY's plunge in 2019 impacted the performance of all selected funds. In the final
analysis, all funds except SBI Blue Chip Fund, Nippon India Large Cap Fund, Nippon
India Growth Fund, Nippon India Small Cap Fund, and DSP Small Cap Fund were
outperformed amid highly volatile market dynamics. We can conclude that it has shown
good performance. Therefore, when investing in mutual funds, investors should consider
statistical parameters such as Jenson's alpha, beta, standard deviation and Sharpe ratio,
apart from NAV and total return, to ensure consistent mutual fund performance. need to
do it.

G. Performance evaluation of equity mutual funds in countries with emerging economies:
Evidence from BRIC, CEE, sea and MENA regions- Lemeshko, O (2015)
The essential precept of classical portfolio concept states that mature capital markets are
almost green accordingly presenting no greater returns and coffee opportunities for
worldwide portfolio diversification. Thus it isn't a wonder that with inside the current
twenty years mutual finances from rising economies with their excessive boom rates,
common bizarre returns and much less than ideal superb correlation with evolved
economies were attracting an growing quantity of worldwide funding flows. In this
context assessment of rising markets finances overall performance has turn out to be a
common subject matter of debate and studies through present day portfolio concept and
concept of capital markets equilibrium. Here it's miles important to kingdom matters
approximately present research: the only aspect is they offer pretty blended consequences
- on average, neighborhood fairness finances do now no longer generate bizarre returns,
however they nonetheless exist; and the alternative aspect is that such proof is based
predominantly upon us of a proof, accordingly restricting the opportunity to derive a few
generalized conclusions approximately mutual fund overall performance particularly
companies of rising economies or rising economies consistent with se. Another not
unusual place downside of present research is their common utilization of information
struggling with survivorship bias, which in mild of brief time-collection of to be had
observations, manifestly do now no longer upload precision to conclusions, derived on
the premise of such samples. In mild of the said above the paper pursuits to reevaluate
absolute and relative risk-adjusted overall performance of open-give up fairness mutual
finances at the pattern of advanced, secondary and frontier economies from the Central
and Eastern Europe, from the South Eastern Asia, from the Middle East and North Africa,
and BRIC economies for the time span from January 2000 to January 2015.
Following set up practice, fund overall performance is evaluated by way of unconditional
and conditional single-aspect and multifactor CAPM time-collection regressions beneath
which character fund returns are regressed over aspect loadings, given through Sharpe
and Treynor ratios, Jensen's alpha and M squared, Fama-French and Carhart measures,
uncooked enter information for that's gathered from Bloomberg terminal and information
units of World Development Indicators and International Financial Statistics. On the
premise of a massive wide variety of overall performance measures and attributes hired
on this studies in addition to survivorship-bias unfastened database, the selected look at
affords a beneficial perception into mutual fund overall performance of specific
companies of rising economies or rising economies consistent with se, documenting
essential us of a and local characteristics. Currently asset control in rising economies
represents the maximum unexpectedly developing phase of worldwide AUM with notably
excessive opposition withinside the enterprise and heavy reliance on countrywide income,
neighborhood capital markets improvement and nice of regulatory environment.
Performance of rising economies mutual finances is a debatable subject. In trendy,
finances positioned in those markets do now no longer appear to reap returns above the
marketplace however they nonetheless exist. The received consequences on four 796
open -give up energetic and non-energetic mutual finances from 27 rising economies
indicate, on trendy, at their appreciably underperforming relative to their benchmarks.
Their underperformance holds each in instances of disaster and recession and in instances
of restoration and monetary boom. However in spite of persistency and ubiquity of such
rising economies fairness finances underperformance, it varies through its electricity and,
accordingly, cappotential to reverse (that is, to be modified into outperformance)
throughout character nations and their companies: the maximum touchy to
macroeconomic adjustments and spark off responding finances are those from BRIC,
particularly Brazil and Russia, and the CEE, particularly the Czech Republic, Hungary
and Poland, even as the least touchy and slowly responding finances are those from the
MENA. Another aspect which must be referred to is that in spite of trendy and pretty
chronic underperformance of majority of fairness finances that are running in 27 rising
economies of the world, nonetheless in each organization of nations, besides the MENA,
there's a small wide variety of pinnacle appearing finances.
