Chapter 2 The Framework

In the following pages, the framework is presented in chart form, and is

divided into three main sections: rearcourt, midcourt and forecourt
Plate 7 (left) and 8 (right). situations. All the stroke-moves in each situation are shown and explained
Hits to the rearcourt in the three charts. When studying the charts, read across the columns
from left to right, beginning from the shuttle position which determines the
type of situation you are in.
When you look at the chart you will notice that all the stroke-moves can
be reduced to three basic moves. These are:
1. The hit to the rearcourt - over the opponent's head (see plate 7)
- past him at the sides (see plate 8)
Part One: The Game 28

2. The hit to the forecourt (see plate 9)

3. The hit to the midcourt - downwards (see plate 10) - horizontally

All the stroke-moves are variations on these three basic moves; they are
the different ways in which the moves can be performed. The reasons for
these moves are clear. When you hit the shuttle to the rearcourt you force
your opponent out of position, away from his central position, and create
Plate 9. space; as he goes further away from the net it becomes more difficult for

position and creates space. A shuttle below net height makes him lift the
shuttle and so presents you with a better chance of making a scoring hit.
Finally, a downward or horizontal hit to the sides or centre of the
midcourt either hits the ground or forces your opponent to lift, which
again increases your chances of making a scoring hit. All the strokes are
played as moves with this target in mind. To play in this way is to play
in accordance with the principle of attack. When we have studied the
charts we can refer back to them whenever necessary, to discuss the
