CHAPTER 2
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
This chapter presents the related literature and studies on the design and
development of automatic screen printing machines. It focuses on the integration of
advanced technologies, efficiency improvements, and user ergonomics. By
examining these aspects, we aim to highlight gaps in the literature and underscore
the potential benefits.
2.1 Global Literature
The design and development of automatic screen printing machines have
transformed the textile and graphics industries by enhancing productivity and precision. As
manufacturers increasingly seek to optimize production processes, automatic screen
printing has emerged as a preferred solution for achieving consistent quality and high
output. Research indicates that automation in screen printing can significantly reduce labor
costs and production time, thereby promoting efficient manufacturing practices (Johnson et
al., 2019). These machines not only streamline operations but also support the growing
demand for customized products.
Furthermore, integrating smart technologies into automatic screen printing
machines, such as IoT (Internet of Things) capabilities, improves operational efficiency and
facilitates remote monitoring. Studies have shown that these features enhance machine
performance and allow for real-time data analysis, enabling manufacturers to make
informed decisions regarding production and maintenance (Smith & Lee, 2020). The
incorporation of such technologies reflects a broader trend towards Industry 4.0, where
automation and data exchange play crucial roles in modern manufacturing.
In addition to improving efficiency, automatic screen printing machines also address
critical issues of sustainability. Research highlights that using eco-friendly inks and
materials in automatic printing processes can significantly reduce the environmental impact
of textile production (Kumar et al., 2021). By adopting sustainable practices, manufacturers
can not only comply with environmental regulations but also appeal to a growing segment of
eco-conscious consumers.
2.1.1 Advancements in Automatic Screen Printing Technology
Garcia and Patel (2022) explore recent advancements in automatic screen printing
technology. They highlight features such as multi-color printing capabilities, high-speed
production, and automated registration systems, emphasizing their role in enhancing print
quality and efficiency. The study underscores the importance of these advancements in
meeting the demands of modern printing applications. However, it identifies a gap in
understanding the long-term operational costs and maintenance requirements associated
with these advanced machines.
2.1.2 User-Centric Design in Automatic Screen Printing
In their research, Thompson and Roberts (2021) analyze the significance of user-
centric design in automatic screen printing machines. They present evidence that
ergonomic considerations and intuitive interfaces can significantly improve operator
satisfaction and reduce the risk of injuries. The authors note that while operational efficiency
is crucial, the comfort of the operators should also be prioritized. This highlights the need for
further studies that explore the balance between functionality and user experience in
machine design.
2.1.3 Evaluating the Impact of Automation on Printing Quality
Chen and Wong (2020) evaluate the impact of automation on the quality of screen-
printed products. Their research provides valuable insights into the correlation between
machine settings, printing speed, and final print quality. Despite these contributions, the
study primarily focuses on established markets, leaving a gap in understanding how
emerging economies might benefit from adopting automatic screen printing technology.
2.2 Local Literature
The design parameters for developing an automatic screen printing machine are
crucial for ensuring both functionality and user satisfaction. According to Reyes and Santos
(2022), key considerations include the choice of printing technology, material selection, and
automation features that enhance operational efficiency. The authors emphasize the
importance of creating machines that are adaptable to various printing applications while
being resilient against wear and tear.
In terms of development schemes, effective integration of automation and user
feedback is essential. Cruz and Dela Cruz (2021) propose a phased approach that begins
with prototyping, followed by user testing and iterative design improvements. Their research
highlights the necessity of selecting appropriate automation technologies that can
efficiently streamline the printing process. Furthermore, they suggest implementing user
feedback mechanisms to continuously enhance machine usability.
To evaluate the usability, durability, and efficiency of automatic screen printing
machines, a comprehensive set of criteria is necessary. According to Villanueva and
Rodriguez (2023), usability can be measured through operator feedback and observational
studies, while durability can be assessed through performance testing and material
analysis. Efficiency should be evaluated based on production output and energy
consumption, ensuring that the machine meets the diverse needs of manufacturers while
promoting sustainable practices.
2.2.1 Case Studies on Automatic Screen Printing in Local Industries
De Leon and Cuadra (2023) present case studies on the implementation of automatic screen
printing machines in local textile industries. Their findings detail design features, operational
challenges, and user feedback regarding machine performance and usability. While this
study provides valuable insights, it lacks a thorough exploration of the economic
implications of adopting these machines, pointing to a critical gap in understanding the
return on investment for manufacturers.
2.2.2 The Role of Automation in Local Manufacturing
Santos and Ramirez (2023) examine the role of automation in enhancing local
manufacturing capabilities. They highlight successful projects that integrate automatic
screen printing machines, improving production quality and efficiency. However, their
analysis does not adequately address the barriers to adoption for small and medium
enterprises, suggesting the need for further research on the factors influencing the
implementation of automation in diverse manufacturing contexts.
2.3 Analytical Framework and Related Literature
The design and development of automatic screen printing machines can be analyzed
through the lenses of usability, durability, efficiency, and user experience. Collectively, these
factors provide a comprehensive framework for the successful development of automated
printing solutions that meet contemporary manufacturing needs.
Usability is essential for operator interaction; effective user-centered design practices
emphasize intuitive interfaces and accessibility features (Norman, 2013). Durability is
critical in manufacturing environments, where robust materials and components are
recommended to withstand operational demands (Khan, 2020). Moreover, efficiency is a
core benefit of automation, promoting productivity and reducing waste, as highlighted by
studies on manufacturing processes (Thompson & Ricketts, 2021). Finally, user experience
influences operator engagement and satisfaction; incorporating ergonomic design can
enhance comfort and reduce fatigue, fostering a positive working environment (Kaplan &
Kaplan, 2019).
