o A formula is an equation that performs a calculation on the
data contained in the worksheet. A formula always begins
with an equal sign (=) and uses arithmetic operators.
o An operator is a symbol that specifies the type of numeric
operation to perform. (+, -, *, /, %, ^)
o The calculated result from the formulas is a variable value
because it can change if the data it depends on changes.
o In contrast, a number entry is a constant value. It does not
start with an equal sign and does not change unless

o A function is a prewritten formula that performs certain
types of calculations automatically.
o The syntax or ‘rules of structure’ for entering all functions
is:
=function name(argument 1, argument 2,….)
o The function name identifies the type of calculation to be
performed. Most functions require you to enter one or more
arguments.
o An argument is the data the function uses to perform the
calculation.
