Chapter 2
Methods
Population and Sample
Population of this research consist of doctors working public and private sector in South
Punjab. Inclusion criteria for this population is all the doctors working in South Punjab in both
public and private sector. Exclusion criteria of this population are all individuals other than doctors
or doctors that are working outside the southern Punjab. To select the sample purposive sampling
technique is used because sample is selected purposefully that is believed is representative of
population of interest. A sample of 200 doctors is selected to gather their responses.
Research Design
Correlational research design (Galton, 1988) is utilized in research, in order to explore the
connection amid variables Emotional Intelligence, Personality Traits and Workplace Satisfaction
among Doctors. Correlational design is chosen for this work. It allows to inspect the relationships
between variables deprived of manipulating them. In the situation of investigating Emotional
Intelligence, Personality Traits, and Workplace Satisfaction among doctors, correlational research
allows researchers to assess the extent to which changes in Emotional Intelligence or Personality
Traitsare associated with changes in Workplace Satisfaction. Additionally, correlational research
consents for the examination of practical relationships, making it mainly suitable for investigating
complex phenomena like workplace satisfaction where multiple factors are being investigated.
Instruments
3 tools are used for data collection from the population. These three scales are Brief
Emotional Intelligence Scale, Big Five Inventory‐10 (BFI‐10) and overall workplace satisfaction
survey.
Brief Emotional Intelligence Scale
Original 33-items Emotional Intelligence scale (Schutte, 1998) is converted into Brief
Emotional Intelligence Scale developed by Kevin et al. (2010) in a 10-items short form. This 10
items measure consist of 10 questions with 5-point format fluctuating as 1= Strongly Disagree -
5= Strongly Agree. Entire score for this measure is intended by taking sum of all scores for all
items, scores range from 10 to 50. Higher the cut-point more is Emotional Intelligence.
Big Five Inventory10 (BFI10)
The Big Five Inventory (John et al., 1991) is a quantity to access personality in 5 minutes
as it consists of 44 items. But a briefer version consists of 10 items used to access personality in
approximately one minute. This scale consists of 10 questions as “I see myself as someone who”
with 5-point Likert scale as 1 = Strongly Disagree to 5 = Strongly Agree. This scale has 5 domains
Extraversion with stuffs 1, 5, Agreeableness with stuffs 2, 7. Conscientiousness with items 3, 8.
Neuroticism items no 4, 9 and Openness to Experience with items 5, 10. Total score will be
calculated firstly by reversing item no 1,3,4,5,7 than sum-up all the responses.
Overall workplace satisfaction survey
Workplace satisfaction scale established by Brayfield and Rothe (1951), consist of 18 items
to measure overall workplace satisfaction. This is uni-dimensional scale measure of overall
workplace satisfaction. A six-item brief form has also been utilized to quantify overall workplace
satisfaction (Agho et al., 1993). These 6 items have 5-point Likert response format 1 = Strongly
Disagree to 5 = Strongly Agree. To gain entire score responses on all items all added up, reversing
the scores of item number 1 and 6.
Procedure
Consent was gained from all the participants; after the field under analysis was described,
data was gathered. Participants received relevant details and directions about the instrument,
including how to attempt and complete the answer sheet. They were promised that all of the
information they provided would remain private. The information from individuals is gathered
using three instruments. The Big Five Inventory-10 (BFI-10), the Brief Emotional Intelligence,
and the overall work satisfaction survey are each of these scales. Participants were requested to
respond in accordance with the instructions offered, and they were urged to answer fairly. After
the gathering of data, it was examined by Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS).
