MYP Command terms

Command Term Definition


Describe Give a detailed account or picture of a situation, event, pattern or process.
List Provide a sequence of items or brief answers.
Explain Give a detailed account including reasons or causes.
Discuss Offer a considered and balanced review that includes a range of arguments, factors or
hypotheses. Opinions or conclusions should be presented clearly and supported by
appropriate evidence
Analyze Break down in order to bring out the essential elements or structure. (To identify parts and
relationships, and interpret information to reach conclusions.)
Identify Provide an answer from a number of possibilities. Recognize and state briefly a
distinguishing fact or feature.
Justify Give valid reasons or evidence to support an answer or conclusion (see also “Explain”).
Discuss Offer a considered and balanced review that includes a range of arguments,
factors or hypotheses. Opinions or conclusions should be presented clearly and
supported by appropriate evidence.
Investigate Observe, study or make a detailed and systematic examination, in order to establish facts
and reach new conclusions.
Evaluate Make an appraisal by weighing up the strengths and limitations.

Define the term globalization and explain one benefit of globalization for developing countries.

Explain the difference between renewable and non-renewable energy sources. Provide one example of each

Based on Source A, describe the trend in global temperatures and identify two possible effects on ecosystems.

Task: 6 (3 marks)
Explain how renewable energy sources can contribute to reducing climate change. Use examples of wind energy
and solar power to illustrate your point.

Task: 7 (4 marks)
Analyze the impact of multinational corporations (MNCs) on the economic development of developing countries.

Criterion D (Thinking Critically)

Task: 8 (4 marks)
Using Source B, identify two regions at high risk of climate-related disasters and explain why they are vulnerable.
