Wow… I learned!

Shockingly, I loved EGL 1010. I woke up every Monday to Thursday morning not

dreading joining the Zoom call. This was not because I had nothing better to do or because I

loved hearing Mr. Lord´s music before class. I loved this class because I actually learned

something new in each class session. I love to learn and I haven´t felt like I have learned much

from my most recent English teachers, so being in this class was like a breath of fresh air.

Throughout this class, I learned more about the impact of pop culture on academic writing, how

to improve my writing technique, and what is expected in college-level essays. I signed up for

this class just to keep English off my mind for my senior year courses, however, I gained some

pretty useful knowledge of writing and I truly want to learn more.

The first assignment I had to complete, the selection of my topic, was quite fun for me

because I got to read so many different perspectives and approaches to the aspects of writing.

Perspectives I never even thought of exploring. Out of 5 topics regarding academic writing, I

chose how pop culture impacts academic writing. The first article I read concerning this topic

was Bronwyn T. Williams´s ¨Popular Culture is Killing Writing¨. From this article, I learned how

engaging in pop culture can improve students´ writing through the practice, learning, and control

it invokes. When I was tasked to research more about this topic and use different sources to

create my argument, I was confident that my essay would be strong. I take details and facts from

many different sources in my life and make arguments out of them every day. My mother is still

encouraging me to be a lawyer lol. So, using the sources about pop culture was not too hard for

me and after the first synthesis, the process of writing became a lot smoother.

Speaking of smooth… my grammar was anything but that. I have always known how to

get my point across when I speak and when I write. However, sometimes the journey to reach

my point is full of bumpy roads and broken bridges. In my previous courses, my teachers have

called me out on my faulty grammar. Yet they did not teach me how to fix it in the same way that

I was taught in this class. The grammar sessions that I engaged in helped me learn and remember

some key grammar rules that improved my writing. For example, I tend to create unnecessarily

wordy sentences. I learned that not every word is significant to my essays and that there are

quicker and more efficient ways to say what I need without boring the audience. Although Mr.

Lord´s breakdowns of each grammar lesson have done wonders, I am still working on improving

my grammar skills.

Before, I even got to work on grammar skills, I learned what colleges expect an essay to

look like. This included how I cite my sources, what tense I use throughout my essay, and what

information should be included before I get into the essay. In this course, I was told that we

should use the MLA 6th Edition format when citing sources. This was not new to me so I was

not worried about missing points for citations. However, I did not know that MLA format meant

everything that is said in the essay should be written in the present tense. This was an adjustment

for me but I did it and surprisingly liked my writing better this way. Lastly, I was taught that my

last name and the page number should be at the top right of every page. Also, on the top left, I

should include my name, the teacher´s name, the course name, and the date. I am glad to have

learned all of this information so now I can apply them in my future courses.

This class has advanced my writing ability and challenged my perspective of writing

overall. I am pleased that I took this class, and I leave this class with no regrets and a huge

thanks to Mr. Lord for all that he has taught me.

The student's personal interest in learning and pop culture played a significant role in their engagement with the course material. Their enthusiasm for new perspectives and improving their writing skills motivated them to actively participate and apply themselves in Mr. Lord's class .

The student learned several expectations for college-level essays: using the MLA 6th Edition format for citations, writing in present tense, and formatting the page with their last name and page number on the top right, along with their full name, teacher's name, course name, and date on the top left .

The student adjusted their writing style to maintain consistency by writing in the present tense, as required by MLA format. This change surprisingly improved their preference for their writing style .

The student found the topic selection process enjoyable because it allowed them to explore diverse perspectives and hone in on an interesting intersection between pop culture and academic writing, which sparked their interest and confidence in the essay process .
