Experiment 7
Simulation of boost converter and implementing voltage feedback for improved
regulation in dc-dc converter.
Objective
• To implement non-ideal Boost converter in NI Multisim.
• To apply voltage feedback in Boost converter for improved regulation.
Introduction
• Boost converter
Boost converters are a type of DC-DC switching converter that efficiently increase (step-
up) the input voltage to a higher output voltage. By storing energy in an inductor during
the switch-on phase and releasing it to the load during the switch-off phase, this voltage
conversion is made possible. Power electronics applications requiring a greater output
voltage than the input source, in particular, depend on boost converters.
• Voltage feedback
Voltage feedback in electronic circuits involves continuously monitoring the output
voltage using a feedback network, typically through a portion of the output voltage being
compared with a reference voltage. An error amplifier then calculates the difference
(error signal) between the actual output voltage and the desired voltage (setpoint). This
error signal is used to adjust a control element (such as a transistor or PWM controller)
to regulate the output voltage and maintain it within a specified range. Voltage feedback
is essential for achieving stable and accurate voltage regulation in power supplies and
other electronic systems, ensuring consistent performance and protecting against
voltage fluctuations.
Lab tasks
• Task 1
Implement boost converter with gate driver ic at proper voltage level. Observe the
voltage regulation with changing load 1 Ω , 5 Ω , 10 Ω and 100 Ω. Also plot graph
between load resistance vs output voltage.
Circuit
Load Output voltage %Regulation
1 Ohm 16.8 V 138.09
5 Ohm 32.1 V 24.61
10 Ohm 35.5 V 12.67
100 Ohm 39.9 V 0.25
• Task 2
Implement voltage feedback keeping constant duty cycle.
Circuit
Load Output voltage %Regulation
1 Ohm 18.5 V 116.21
5 Ohm 33.5 V 19.40
10 Ohm 35.9 V 11.42
100 Ohm 53.3 V 0.25
Conclusion
In this lab we conclude that as the load increases the output voltage of boost converter
decreases and its voltage regulation increases. By adding feedback circuit the output
voltage remains constant and voltage regulation is also very low with change in load but
when load is very much increased the output voltage of the converter decreases.
