Charles and Daniel stood in the doorway of the sanitarium as a cool breeze blew through the building
bringing with it the stale smell of the abandoned building. Helena closed the distance and joined them
staring at the black marks on either side of the roof's edging.

Helena could still feel the sensation of her first encounter with the thing in the darkness of the basement
and it chilled her.

Daniel looks around the inside of the building and then says, "Ok Charles... you're the boss here. Let's find
a room suitable for your needs, preferrably away from the corpse room if you don't mind. While we're
looking, keep your eyes open for clipboards, folders, filing cabinets, journal books... anything that might
hold a key to what the hell is going on around here."

He looked to the other soldiers that accompanied them, "Let's try to stick in groups no smaller than three.
If you see shadows moving, don't shoot first and ask questions later because if it's really one of those
shadow things, chances are it won't do you any good. But if someone is shambling towards you looking all
messed up and like it wants to taste your brain, fill it full of lead."

He smirked and rubbed the back of his neck, then said, "Well.. no, best to ask it a question first if you can...
see if it answers legibly. So far as we know, this creature cannot talk through the bodies it posesses."

The four grunts chuckled at Daniel's comment in disbelief.

Daniel spun around, looking at the grunts with a sense of growing anger. "Does it look like I'm joking to
you?" he asked pointedly. "Listen to what I say and you might stay alive through the night. If you're
having a hard time following my directions, we'll go talk to Commander Stoug and he'll verify what I say to
satisfy your doubts right before we start your court martial hearings. Do I make myself clear?"

It felt good for a change to be in a position over the grunts. He remembered how he was bullied all the way
through boot camp and while in the field. Now, as an officer, things changed. He turned back around and
continued following Charles along.

OOC: Somehow I missed this chapter.

Charles' eyebrows shot up a bit as Daniel yelled at the grunts, he didn't blame him in the slightest however,
they were taking this far to lightly and on top of things it was not professional for a soldier to make light of
their superior officer's orders. It was just uncharacteristic of Daniel to yell.

"Alright then, well we don't need a very big room and we prefer to have a room with no windows. Light,
even the smallest amount can and will destroy the film during the development process." At that, Charles
starts looking for a windowless room.

Daniel will start at level one, checking the room to his right, then the one across the hall from it, then
continue in a counter-clockwise search pattern for a windowless room, or filing cabinets, or anything that
looks like it might hold notes that could be useful. If Level One proves fruitless, Daniel suggests
subterrenean rooms followint the stairs downward. In the basement, there is opt to be fewer (if any)
windows.

Daniel’s search for documents came up empty. The main floor of the sanitarium is nearly barren with dusty
wooden tables and benches sit in the middle of each room. The couple crates in the larger rooms had long
been ransacked leaving only crudely folded canvas tarps, a handful of nails, and remnants of a glass of
some sort. Whatever records they kept here had been take out long ago.

Entering the building, Helena felt a chill run down her spine. The strange sweet smell of the air reminded
her of the basement and her first encounter with the shadow.

Charles following Daniel throughout the rooms finally decided the best place to set up the darkroom was
next to the stairs. Having no windows, it was perfect to prevent his photos from getting ruined by accident.
Now all he needed was his trunks of equipment from the truck.

=====

Li Ming sat shaken at the house of horrors they had discovered. The smell of the place was beginning to
nauseate her so she walked outside for some fresh air. Her mind was running a thousand miles a minute
with the shock of what she had witnessed. It was best to walk or meditate to clear her mind. Surely answers
would follow.

Aside from the traffic of uniformed men the little village was dead. It seemed even the birds tried to avoid
the place; birds that is other than carrion eaters. Dark wings flew overhead circling the site waiting for the
troops to leave.

She tried to imagine what life was like here before these creatures arrived. The river passed by the Grist
Mill, its sign in the old English style swinging gently with a rusty squeak. Small patches of grass grew
between the ruts in the path where the delivery carts would stop in front of the platform.

The shop house across the street stood empty and still, its supplies untended, the produce growing stale. Li
could almost see little girls sitting on the porch in their farm dresses staring into the window at the canister
of candies on the counter.

Somehow even the cemetery across from the sanitarium seemed peaceful, a welcome deviation from
today’s militarized invasion. With the grass neatly trimmed and surrounding trees maintained it was easy to
see why the town would like to rest there in the end.

A low stone wall surrounded the small plot that made the shape of a Christian cross. Each row was neatly
although tightly packed with large headstones proudly announcing one’s status. The more decorative and
ornate stones obviously belonged to some wealthy figure of the town’s past including a marble crypt
standing opposite a darker stone building. Li Ming could not identify the rock, but it was obviously similar
to other headstones with an ashen grey color.

Where the two lines of the cross met, a simple gazing pool took the focal point. Small weeds grew between
the cracks and the water was clear despite the few leaves on the surface and sediment that collected in the
bottom.

With Daniel’s assistance and a bit of rope from one of the trucks, they strung up the tarps in such a way to
block off the entrance to the makeshift dark room. “Those nails really came in handy eh boss?” One of the
grunts smirked as he admired their handiwork. “So I guess we need to get your stuff.” The young man’s
accent was unusual, either Spanish or Italian, but it was hard to nail down exactly. His dark hair and olive
complexion would have made him at home nearly anywhere in southern Europe.

[Link] Page 3 of 11 11/22/24 12:29 AM

Charles was about to answer the young man when soldier yelled, “come on! We’re heading back across the
river. Stoug’s orders.”

“Sorry sir,” the young man saluted quickly, “orders and all.”

Through the open doors the last few minutes of evening sunlight pierced through the drab lifelessness of
the old hospital. It would be dark soon and Charles hadn’t even gotten his equipment secured yet! Jury-
rigging the light curtain and moving a few of the tables around sure took longer than he anticipated.
Besides, it was chow time.

Daniel nodded to the soldiers and then said to Charles, "The best laid plans of mice and men, eh? Well... I
suppose moving across the river and away from this place during nightfall is a great idea. Just wish Stroug
would have let us know that was the plan before we got all involved in making your dark room." He started
heading for the door, "Coming?"

As Li Ming strolled around the village, she ran into Father Malory, the squad’s chaplain. He was a devout
catholic with a balding scalp and a hairline that made his forehead seem oddly large. The grey on his side
burns gave him a wise look even if his eyes did not. “G’d evnin’ miss Ming,” he nodded cordially pulling
the young woman from her trance. “Dreadful case this eh? I haven’t seen anything like this before. Some of
the men said that you had encountered the,” his voice trailed off as if unsure as how to describe ‘it’, “well,
uh, the thing. What can you tell me of it?”

Helena move upstairs with a grunt following her into the shadowy rooms above. With an oil lamp lit, the
soldier escorted his superior through the top floor, their foot steps echoing loudly through the wooden floor.
Reaching one of the windows, they pulled the planks from it, letting glorious light into the drab place. With
the last plank torn from the window frame, they heard movement from behind them.

Whirling, Helena snatched her side arm scanning the dark as her eyes straigned to adjust. The young soldier
too drew his pistol beginning to breathe heavily. “What is it?” he whispered choking on the words.

"Good evening to you, father." She said with a smile, then the mentioning of the spirit her smile went away
quickly. "Well what I could make of this spirit is it will posess any body within reach... except for me. It
was like it was afraid of me. I can drive it out of the person's body with a blessing but most normal
weapons dont work on it. I wanted to test the theory that maybe blessed guns would do the trick. But the
guns I blessed never got used." She then paused for a moment "This spirit just wouldn't give up, it only
went for able-body people. It jumped in an out of 3 people before we could get out of there. It was a scary
but frustrating."

"I don't know." Helena whispered, slowly turning around. She was breathing heavier as well, though it was
either the fire or the fear of being enclosed in an almost dark space. Her hands began to tremble again, but
she concentrated on the oil lamp and everything seemed to get more normal for her.

Daniel left the sanitarium, thanking the soldiers for all their hard work, and made his way back to where his
medical pack lay. From there, he looked around to see the general direction of relocation for those within
the village. He stopped one grunt that was hauling some equipment and asked the directions toward the
night-time camp. The grunt just so happened to be on his way there, so Daniel followed along, taking his
gear. He took one look back towards the village, scanning each dead building with scrutiny. "I know
you're there somewhere... waiting. You should just leave..." the medic/technician suggested to the wind
that travelled through the ghost-town, hoping beyond hope that his suggestion would fall upon the
creature's intangible ears. "Things would be much easier if you were just gone."

“Demonic possession?” The priest’s brow wrinkled. “I have not heard of demons leaping from one soul to
another except on the command of the almighty. I suppose if it feared you than perhaps faith alone might
be armor against this creature?” There was something strange to the priest’s mood. His eyes twinkled with
excitement and his tone… Li Ming had heard that before. It was the kind of tone a teacher might use with a
student, not quite condescending, but not as equals. Westerners always seemed to think they were so
superior to the East.

Li was about to say something when the crack of a gun firing over and over broke her train of thought.

Peering into the darkness, Helena's eyes strained to see what her gut told her was here. Her young
apprentice, his name was James Talbert, stepped forward lifting the lamp high. He had heard the rumors
and seen the bodies at the house just across town and was visibly trembling, the lamp rattled in his hand.

He stepped forward towards the doorway into the room and they heard it again. A scuffling sound like nails
on the wooden floor. The young soldier leapt to the other side of the door and Helena instinctively took a
flanking position on the other side. Mouthing the words, Helena began the count – one, two, three.

Each on pointed their gun scanning the room from side to side. Movement from the corner of her eye
caught her attention but James fired first. Each shot echoed in the building like a hammer on her ears as the
young soldier fired round after round at the form darting along the floor.

Gunsmoke filled the hall, and the echo of ten shots ringing, Helena tracked the thing’s motion as it circled
and ran into the light. Beady eyes looking over a whiskered nose stared back at her from the opposite
corner.

James sighed feeling asinine and started to giggle. “I feel awfully silly,” he smiled lowering his empty gun.

Daniel's head moved to look toward the direction from where the gunfire originated, then he looked to
Charles. With a sigh, he said, "Looks like today isn't quite done yet. Helena might have found something.
Shall we?" Not waiting for an answer, he left the bag at his feet and started running back inside the building
and up the stairs to where he expected Helena might have run off to.

As everyone dashed in to see what the commotion was about, the young soldier had to repeat his
embarrassment over and over. "It was a rat! How many ways can I say otherwise... I buggered up!" He
would definitely not live this down any time soon.

His soldier comrades chuckled and prodded. "Best not make shadow puppets around this mate!" One
cajoled, "he'll shoot off the bits!"

Charles and Daniel arrived relieved that nothing serious had happened and shortly after the Asian woman,
Li Ming pushed through the crowd along with the team's chaplain. As soon as Father Malory was spotted,
the soldiers quenched their laughter noticeably.

“Evenin’ father,” James Talbert said nervously as he caressed his pistol not sure what to do with it.

“I trust everything is kosher,” Malory asked eying the young man and the room.

“Yes – Yes sir,” Talbert looked to Helena for reassurance. “It was a – er – misfire father.”

“Rat hunting,” one of the soldiers mumbled under his breath which brought many to a snicker.

Himself smirking, James retorted, “I thought it was the-“

“Damon?” The priest cut him off and finished Talbert’s sentence for him. “It is not a laughing matter and
you would do well to turn your thoughts to God in this time.” James nodded mumbling his agreement with
the elder priest.

Charlies went and leaned against the wall, a misfire, shooting at rats... hadn't he had enough of these kind
of scares, the false alarms that seem to generally shake you to your core? All those who survived the Great
War would forever be changed. Simple everyday things would always remind you of the war, a horse that
suddenly stands alert, or the sound of a loud bang or some idiot shooting at shadows. Forever and always
those things would make his heart and all survivors of the war hearts race like there was no tomorrow.

As he slide down the wall and sat against it in a crouch position he could clearly remember the sound of
men screaming, artillery fire and explosives going off. Only once in the entire war did he actually soil
himself however. It was when they were dug into a trench and all hell was breaking loose, night was just
falling and suddenly the sound of a metal ball hit into the dirt near him.

He had heard the sound as clear and loud as if the surrounding area around him were quiet and he were
alone. As he scanned the trench he saw it, a German Stielhandgranate (stick grenade or as we know it, the
potato masher) and knew he had no time to retrieve and throw it so instead he threw himself on top. In the
few seconds it took for him to reach one position to his destination a mere 3 yards, his life flashed before
him and he briefly wondered who the photographer would be that took his post mortem photo.

As he lay there he saw the faces of the few who knew what he had just done, none of the faces showed
remorse or cheerfulness that he had sacrificed himself for them, the look was of just so long old chum.
However it was after a few seconds that he began to realize that something was wrong, time began to flow
at it's normal pace and he realized that he wasn't blasted into thousands of pieces across the land side.

Slowly he got to his knees and inspected his body first. They say that you never hear the bullet that has
your name on it, maybe it was true for grenades as well? Everyone was of course busy around him so it was
a bit difficult to confirm whether he was dead or alive at that moment but within seconds he knew he was
alive as an explosion occurred down the trench from where he was at. It wasn't the sound but a hot piece of
shrapnel that flew at him and cut his cheek that let him know. He looked down and there was the grenade
still, it's fuse lying in a puddle of blood and mud. It was then that he felt his body releasing fluids as he
knelt there in shock.

Charlies cupped his face in his hands and closed his eyes. He had seen enough and it was starting to show.
Idiots shooting at rats.

Confused the group looked at her questioning. Father Malory did not hesitate, "you saw the demon here?"
He clutched the crusifix on his chest and began rummaging around in his satchel for his latin bible.

Talbert looked down embarrased even more. "I appreciate you covering for me, Helena, but it WAS just a
rat."

At Daniel’s suggestion, the men began to take action. The fading sunlight pierced through the gaps in the
planks like daggers into the soldier’s eyes. In a few moments the planks were all off on the four corner
windows and soldiers had their heads out the windows eyeing the blackened marks.

Daniel had to see for himself, but all of the black marks had a thin layer of soot and smelled of charred
wood. Lightning- it was the only reasonable explanation. But it made no sense that lightning would strike
the corners in nearly the same location.

And as if to confirm his suspicions, thunder rolled several miles distant. With a view of the horizon, Daniel
could see the reds and yellows of the fading sun falling on dark clouds that flickered with heat lightning.

Noticing Charles’ distress, Father Malory stepped over placing his hand on the man’s shoulders. “In times
of trials, the lord’s word can often bring comfort. Would you care to seek his blessings?”

By the time the men wrapped up their work, darkness had fallen and their only light was a single oil lamp.
One of the young men suggested, “we’d best be off before Stoug has us polishing his boots!” And the other
grunts nodded their agreement. With flashlights in hand, the soldiers began migrating down stairs to the
truck.

Daniel shook his head at Charles' disbelief. "It was my faith in God that protected me while that thing was

Charles looked at Daniel with a look of mild shock. "How can you believe in a God from all you've seen? I
don't mean this haunted mission but I mean in the war and so forth. How could any loving God allow his
people to do such horrible things to each other? If it wasn't the bullets flying or the grenades exploding it
was those damn krauts letting off the gas. Even the old ones said it was the worse war they had ever heard
of or seen. It was horror pure and simple, I'm surprised mighty Cthulhu himself didn't surface." At that
Charles began scratching his neck violently again, ignoring the trickles of blood that went down his neck.
