Tutorial Test-2, Max. Marks: 20, Time: 45 min (8.05 AM to 8.50 AM)
Open Book Date: 30.05.2023
Model Solutions
1. Draw valence shell molecular orbital (MO) diagram and determine the bond order of a molecule of
OF+, assuming the electronegativities of F and O are same and there is no 2s-2p interaction. Show
valence shell electrons in each MO but labeling the molecular orbitals is NOT required. [2+1 = 3M]
Solution

Bond order = 2

2. What is the parity of 2π orbital in NO molecule? Give a one-line reason. [2M]

Solution

Parity is not applicable, in the heteronuclear molecule, the orbital size is different, and therefore centre of
inversion is not possible.

3. Three moles of an ideal gas undergo an adiabatic irreversible expansion from 1 L to 4 L at 300 K.
Calculate (in SI units only) Sgas, Ssurr, Stotal for this process. Justify calculation for the Sgas. [3 M]
Solution

Since entropy is a state function, Ssys is independent of the path, i.e., reversible or irreversible.
Sgas = 3 x 8.314 J/K/mol ln (4/1) = 34.56 J/K
Adiabatic expansion, therefore qsurr = 0. Thus, Ssurr = 0
Stotal = 34.56 J/K

4. For a reaction, 2N2(g) + O2(g)  2N2O(g), ∆H° = + 39.4 kcal at 27 oC. Calculate ∆U° (in kcal) at 27
o
C (assume ideal gas behavior). [2M]
Solution

ng = 2-3 = -1;

∆H°=∆U°+ ng RT; ∆U °= 39400 – (-1mol)(1.989calK-1mol-1)(300K) = 39.99 kcal

5. Mention the difference in the type of possible electronic transitions between Et2CO and
MeCH=CH-CH=CMe2. [2M]
Solution

n→π* / n→σ* transitions are possible in Et2CO and they are not possible in MeCH=CH-CH=CMe2
6. If the residual entropy of 2 moles of a molecular system is 34.58 J/K, predict the number of
orientations possible for this system at absolute zero. [2M]
Solution

S = kb ln W; For 1 mole S = kb ln WNA = Rln W. For 2 moles: S = 2 R ln W = 34.58 J/K

Hence, 2 x 8.314 x ln W = 34.58; ln W= 34.58/16.628 = 2.0796; W = 8;

7. Using steady state approximation, arrive at the expression for the rate of formation of the product P
for the reaction A+ B + D → P having the following mechanism. [3 + 1 = 4M]
A+ B → C ---------(k1); C→A + B ---------(k-1); C +D → P (k2); Under which condition the reaction
shows second order kinetics?
Solution

Rate d[P]/dt = k2 [C] [D];

Applying SSA on C; d[C] /dt = k1 [A] [B] - k-1 [C] - k2 [C] [D] = 0

Therefore, [C] = k1 [A] [B]/ {k-1 + k2[D]};

Rate = k2 k1 [A] [B][D]/ {k-1 + k2[D]};

If, k2[D] is very high, rate is = k1 [A] [B];

Thus, second-order kinetics is observed when k2[D] is very high than k-1.

8. Mention the IR-active molecules only (a) H2C=CH2 (b) HCHO (c) CH4 (d) Me-O-Me. [2M]
Solution

All four molecules are IR-active.
