To our beloved Principal II of Siaton NHS, to our clever resource speaker, sir Joshua
Sordivillo, co-science teacher. Good afternoon to one and all!
Before anything else, I wanna borrow the line of one of the famous scientist and
philosopher, Albert Einstein and I quote, “Education is not the learning of facts, but training
of the mind to think.”
I am here in front of you today to share my impressions with the 2 days we’re
together with our facilitator in this District Roll-Out Training.
Day 1, we were given words of welcome by ma’am Jo Jamandron, the Principal 2 of
SNHS. She inspires us to love our profession, to become more productive in imparting
knowledge to our learners and reminded us that behind our hectic and overlapping
schedules, we were one and welcomed in this 3-Day District Roll-Out Training on MELCs-
Based Test Construction/Integrative Assessment in Science.
We were recognized by ma’am Jovena G. Lumaya, we introduced ourselves with our
school yells and then the Rationale of this training was explained by ma’am Maria Lourdes T.
Funtilon.
Ma’am Ma. Aletta Aarona R. Gajelomo, shared her words of gratitude to us and to
everyone. Our resource speaker, sir Joshua S. Soldivillo was introduced by ma’am Rachel Q.
Gadayan with those overwhelming inspiring backgrounds of sir Joshua.
Our training focuses on Assessment Design and Use: Principles, Practices, and Future
Directions. We were once introduced with the K to 12 Curriculum Framework and defined
the most critical part of it which is the Monitoring and Evaluation System.
We have learned that LEARNING means CHANGE. We have also encountered the
comparison between Assessment and Evaluation, Formative and Summative Assessments.
Assessment and Evaluation are 2 different things. Which is, Assessment means gathering of
evidence of learning while Evaluation means giving of value judgements. We were refreshed
with the ideas about the purposes of Assessment, the Assessment for, as, and of learning as
well as with the Formative and Summative Assessments. Me, myself, and I know we all are,
in this 4-cornered room, encountered two words, the GLOCALIZATION and FEEDFORWARD. I
was also amazed by the presentation of the Garden of Analogy which impressively
explained the comparison of Assessment and Evaluation. That, just like a plant, we have no
right to judge or evaluate the length of a plant if we didn’t do anything with it, if we did not
assess and take good care of it. To wrapped up the morning session on the Day 1, the Ideal
is that Assessment and Learning Teaching and Activities are with ALIGNMENT as well as with
the Curriculum Standard/Guide.
In the afternoon, we were challenged to determine whether we really understand the
talks from the morning session by grouping us and make outputs out from the lecture. We
were tasked to make Formative and Summative Assessment based on the Quarter,
Performance Standard and MELC. Everyone accepted the challenge with enthusiasm and
excitement. Afterwhich, we were once again introduced by Traditional Assessment namely
the Multiple Choice. We have learned that it has 6 different types namely, Single-Correct
Answer, Best Answer, Negative, Multiple Response, Multiple T-F Example, and Combined
Responses. Later, we were challenged again to make our own Multiple Choices based on
what we have learned from the talk. We have finished the work and checked it in the
morning session of Day 2. I bet we have a lot to improve in making MCQs and a lot more to
work with it.
Day 2, we were introduced with the Alternative Assessment namely focusing on
Performance Assessment. We were reminded by the Authenticity and Fidelity of
Assessments. There are 2 types of Rubrics, the Holistic and Analytic wherein it was
differentiated well. There are 5 things to do to come up with an Authentic Assessment.
These are, Task, Physical Context, Social Context, Result/Form and Criteria and Standards. In
designing Authentic Assessments, we need to have this so-called GRASPS which stands for
Goal, Role/Responsibility, Audience, Situation/Scenario, Product/Performance and
Standards. We’re also presented new version of the story between the turtle and the rabbit.
It gave us inspirations and reminded us of the moral lessons of each story. Next tasked was
making Performance Tasks which involves everyone. We’re glad we’ve made outputs even
with time pressure, yes, it is but then again, we learned it a lot from the talks.
With our facilitator, the training was excellent conducted in a very straight forward
and advanced way. It is definitely worth for everyone involved in this Roll-Out as it gives us
the ability not only to get knowledge on the opportunities available, tips for better
constructing tests or integrative assessments but also well it is a platform whereby we can
share these learnings to other teachers in other subjects. We could definitely involve this
during our LAC Session. This training makes us feel to be interested and gave us many
practical tools beyond the knowledge on a specific topic. Everyone could conclude that this
training met our expectations since the trainer had an excellent ability to communicate with
our realizations. I am very glad to attend this 3-Day District Roll-Out Training on MELCs-
Based Test Construction/Integrative Assessment in Science. Thank you, our Big God. Thank
you for the Science Coordinators in creating this and making this happen. On my end, it will
be very helpful in my daily work. Sir Joshua, thankyou for your commitment, sharing your
knowledge and expertise with us as well as the useful tips. Those knowledge and expertise
sir will be an endless source of insider knowledge. I would definitely attend another one like
this with a clever facilitator, if given a chance and opportunity.
