This document provides information about an upcoming Lenten series at Peace Lutheran Church focused on questions God asks us. The series is based on a book by Trevor Hudson called "Questions God Asks Us". Each week will look at a different question God poses to help believers reflect during Lent. The goal is to help people lay aside what holds them back from fully following Christ.

Today and everyday, Lutheran World Relief Quilts and Kits are given to families throughout the world, a helping hand, a sign of comfort and hope for the future. The requests are on the rise. Quilts and Kits are urgently needed!!!!! WELCA and the Quilters have decided to create a way you can help. This is an optional project. Our plan for the LWR Kit Project is as follows: personal care, fabric, school and baby care kits. You can form your own groups; who and how many is your choice. Choose any of the 4 kits to put together. Make as many or few as you want. These kits will be delivered along with the quilts to Osakis in October. The lists and instructions are on the following pages.

Pens and pencils, a toothbrush, a quilt ordinary items we take for granted become treasures in the hands of their recipients. The items you send will be cherished and used by people who take nothing for granted, for whom even a simple bar of new soap is special. Your gifts of time and resources toward making LWR Quilts and Kits are beautiful expressions of Gods love and grace to those in greatest need. Thank you for your partnership in putting them together

Stewardship of the Good News

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely,* and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, 2looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of * the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God. (Hebrews 12:1-2)
As we prepare for another new season, the season of Lent, I have been struggling on how to approach this time treasured season with new eyes of faith, so that I can deepen in that faith. Lent is a time racked with traditions; giving up vices, adding new virtues, Midweek Church services, even $2 filet-o-fish sandwiches. Somehow I feel like I know this season to well to let God further make and mold me through it. That being said, I found an article written by a Pastor at a Prison, which just might help me see Lent in a more helpful way this year:

Prison is always Lent; the barbed wire is reminiscent of a crown of thorns, the armed towers the cross. Everything surrounding a man in prison reminds him how much he has screwed up and how much control the state has over any given man. A man realizes how little he has control over his environment in prison; he is told when to eat, sleep, go to the bathroom, whether he can have medical attention, where he can go of course, and if under death penalty when to stop breathing. The prison context always lifts up faith and forgiveness from any text we read, regardless of the season. Its that trust thing again. Faith is always a risk and requires trust, and of course my guys have broken trust left and right in their lives as well as being on the receiving end of a lot of broken promises. Through forgiveness they can begin again to build trust with others, knowing God has forgiven them and trusts them when society will not.
What if this year Lent becomes a place where we can truly hear that message of forgiveness, through any text we read? What if we try to push off all those broken promises we have made and start fresh with the Promise that God is here for us? What if this lent we forgive, once for all, those who have sinned against us, so that their sin no longer holds us back? What if we look to Jesus this Lent, the perfecter of our faith, and lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, in order that we can run the race that is set before us? I dont know the answers to those questions, and I acknowledge that these things are much more complicated that they may seem, but I would love to begin to find the answers with you, this Lent.

Lent 2012 Questions God Asks Us

Our Lenten Series this year is centered around the Questions that God Asks Us, and is based off a book by the same name written by Trevor Hudson. As we try to lay aside all that holds us back, the Sin that clings so closely to each and every one of us, we are called to listen to the short, but anything but simple, questions that God asked our ancestors in the faith, and now ask us. God has a way of stripping back all of our excuses, and breaking through all of our walls with the truth that comes in the asking of the Questions God Asks Us. February 22 Ash Wednesday What Are You Doing Here? February 29 Where Are You? March 7 What Is Your Name? March 14 What Is That In Your Hand? March 21 What Are You Looking For? March 28 Who Do You Say That I Am? April 5 Maundy Thursday Do You Understand What I Have Done For You? (with First Communion) April 6 Good Friday April 8 Easter During Lent we will be having supper at 5:30pm followed by worship at 6:30pm. (N0 Supper Ash Wednesday) We will have a sign up sheet on the kitchen counter at church for volunteers to furnish soup and bread and serve.
