Ribbed Slab System
The general layout of a ribbed slab system is shown in the figure.
a) Determine the reinforcement for flexure and shear in the ribbed slab.
In the shear design do not ignore the contribution of concrete (Vc¹0).
b) Draw the reinforcement scheme of the slab system layout.
Live loads on floor, q=3.5kN/m2
Unit weight of infill, hollowed blocks, ginfill=12 kN/m3
Unit weight of RC, gRC=25 kN/m3
Materials: C25 / S420
Determination of Slab Type:
Ribbed slabs are generally preferred in longer spans in order to reduce the self-weight of the RC slabs. In
these slabs loads are transferred in a certain direction. Joists are arranged along the long span direction
while the band beams are placed in the perpendicular short span. Therefore, joists are supported by shorter
band beams which results in smaller flexure moments.

Static Analysis:
Regarding to TS500, if the ratio of any two adjacent span lengths is not less than 0.8 (Lmin/Lmax>0.80) and the
ratio of live loads to dead loads is less than two (q/g£2.0); the bending moments can be calculated
approximately by using coefficients.

The length of distributed reinforcement, 2f12, will be extended from support
to the other side up to 25% of beam-span (L/4).
In this case, there is no need an additional reinforcement.

Distribution reinforcement should be provided in both directions in the deck with a reinforcement ratio of
r=0.0015 in each direction.

If the span of joists is more than 4 meters, transverse joists (distribution ribs) of at least the same size as the
longitudinal ones should be provided. The transverse joists are arranged to provide the main joists work
together.
