Open Source
Definition – Software with source code that anyone can inspect, modify, and enhance.

Pros – Absolute transparency, Flexibility, Agility, Enhanced security, Cost-efficiency,


Scalability, the open-source community.

Cons – Lack of dedicated support and customer service, hidden costs, fragmentation, and
compatibility issues, intellectual property, and licensing concerns.

Examples – Firefox, OpenOffice, Gimp, Alfresco

Definition – Shareware is a type of proprietary software that is initially shared by the owner
for trial use at little or no cost.

Pros –
 It is initially free for the customers.
 The user can fully understand the capabilities and flaws of the software.
 One will not have to pay money for software he doesn't like.
 A lot of overhead expenses of printing and packaging of software are saved for the
author.

Cons –
 Malware: Hackers can fool users using adware and make them download malicious
software.
 Security Vulnerabilities: The shareware is usually more at risk. ...
 Sponsored Software: Some sharewares may download a secondary program which
can cause a threat to the system.

Definition – Freeware is software, most often proprietary, that is distributed at no monetary
cost to the end user.

Pros – Available to users free of cost, Distribution is free of cost. To promote a particular
brand, To promote a program of a non-profit organization or an educational institute, Can
help in collecting traffic for a website, Many companies earn revenues by advertising or in-
app purchases, Offering a ‘lite’ version of the software to attract people towards the full
version, Earning revenues by downloads, People who cannot afford to pay money can buy
this software, There is no time limit for usage.

Cons – Maintenance Charges: After selling the software the company has to spend money to
maintain the software and pay its developers, Errors Handling: If there are any bugs the
organization has to correct them free of cost, Source Code Access: Users are not having any
right on the source code. Hence, they cannot make any changes according to themselves,
Distribution: Users have no right to distribute the code further, Copyright: The users need to
follow certain copyright rules. Besides, they cannot use the software without following these
rules.

other solutions, It is additionally too difficult for many users to use and could not always be
tailored for industry.
