for the State B title

For the first time in four years there will
be a new Class B state football champion.
Northern B champs Malta shutout three-
time defending champions Florence 37-0
on a cold Saturday afternoon.
Florence (9-1) lost its first playoff game in
14 games. The 768 mile round trip was a
silent one for the Falcons on the way home.
Malta (11-0) will host Manhattan
(11-0) in the state championship game
Saturday at 1 p.m.
The host Mustangs put up 30 points
in the second quarter and added another
7 in the third. The teams battled to a 0-0
first quarter tie before the Mustangs took
control.
The scoring started when Malta had
the Falcons pinned at the 1 yard line.
The Mustangs scored on a safety at the
11:53 mark in the second quarter. Blaine
Downing tackled the quarterback in the
end zone. The Mustangs tacked on another
score 19 seconds later when Dawson
Hammond caught a pass from Stockton
Oxarart for a 59-yard touchdown. Retan
kicked the extra point. Ten seconds later
it was Downing scoring from 7-yards out
and Retan booting the PAT for a 16-0
lead.
Hammond caught a 5-yard pass from
Oxarart with 5:39 to play in the half. With
1:10 to play Mason Simanton caught a 31-
yard pass from Oxarart. Retan tacked on
his fourth extra point.
Malta wrapped up the scoring in
the third quarter to get a running clock.
Hammond was on the receiving end of a
45-yard pass from Oxarart. Retan booted
the PAT for a 37-0 lead with 5:28 to play.
Florence was in unfamiliar territory
being down 37-0 and having a running

In Class A it was Billings Central
(11-0) beat Fergus (9-3) 34-14 and
Laurel (9-2) slipped past Havre (8-4)
35-28. Central will host Laurel Saturday.
Class C 8-man had Fairview (11-0)
beating Scobey (7-4) 18-6 and Belt (11-
0) blanking Drummond-Philipsburg
(9-2) 45-0. Fairview will host Belt
