Why We Need Winter
Winter can be long, cold, and inconvenient, but it is a very important
season. Plants need the shorter days and cold temperatures to become
dormant (which is sort of like sleeping). During this time, they store
up energy so they can start growing again in the spring. For example,
if a fruit free doesn't have enough cold days during the winter, it won't
make as many buds, and the ones it does make will be weaker. Cold
winters also reduce the number of troublesome insects like mosquitoes,
ticks, and fleas. People also need winter. Studies show people think
better in cold weather. They also sleep better. Because your body
temperature falls as you go to sleep, it's easier to fall asleep when it is
cool.

Would You Eat a Bug?
Do you know that many people around the world eat insects every
day as a main part of their diet? in fact, people have always eaten
insects. Today. eating insects is most common in Africa, where there
are over 500 species of edible insects. These include caterpillars,
termites, locusts, grasshoppers, crickets, ants, bees, bugs. and beetles.
The main countries were people eat insects are the Democratic
Republic of the Congo, Congo, the Central African Republic,
Cameroon, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Nigeria and South Africa.
In other countries, some people are trying to promote eating insects
as a way to provide more food as the Earth’s population continues to
grow. In countries that already eat insects, edible insects are found in
the wild. Science is still trying to understand how they could be mass
produced for mass consumption.

Beverly Cleary
Beverly Cleary was born in McMinnville, Oregon in 1961. She lived on a
farm in a town that wasn't big enough to have a library. Beverly's mother wrote
to the State library asking them to send books to their small down. When they
did, her mother became the town librarian, tending to the books in a room over
the town bank. Beverly grew up loving books, and as she became a famous
children's author, it will probably surprise you to know that Beverly struggled
to learn how to read!
She decided while in elementary school that she wanted to become a writer
when she grew up. One reason was because she was never able to find books to
read about neighborhoods like hers and children ike those she knew. In later
interviews, Beverly always said that she got her ideas from her "own experience
and the world around her." Today, kids can read about beloved characters like
Ramona and Beezus Quimby, Henry Huggins, and Ellen Tebbits.
Beverly Cleary is one of the most successful American children's authors,
with 91 milion (and counting) books sold all around the world, and she was
named a living legend by the library of Congress. Beverly Cleary died on March
25th, 1991.

Kebabs
A kebab is a meal of cooked meat that comes from the Middle East.
The kebab is believed to have first been eaten in Turkey as long ago as
the eorty 14th century. Soldiers at the time hunted animals for food and
would grill the chunks of meat over their fires, using their swords for
skewers. The Turkish word kebap comes from the Arabic word kabäb,
which means roasted meat. Today, kebabs are eaten all over the world.
They are commonly served with rice, but are also sometimes served
with bread. in Arabia, kebabs made from marinated (soaked in a
seasoned sauce) lamb make up a large part of people's diet. The
marinade is the most important part of the kebab because it gives the
meat its flavor. A kebab marinade is a sauce usually made from some
combination of lemon juice, olive oil, milk and yoghurt, onion juice,
cinnamon, wild marjoram, tomato juice and spices.

Chickens
Chickens are domestic birds. Chickens provide people with meat
and eggs. Some people also keep chickens, which can live as long as
15 years, as pets.
Chickens are smarter than most people think. Scientists researching
chickens have found that they can remember and learn from past
events, dream, understand and share the feelings of others, and even
do math!
Chickens can be as little as two pounds or as big as eight pounds or
more. They have reddish combs on their heads and two reddish fleshy
growths called wattles under their necks. Birds don't have teeth. The
food they eat gets ground up in a part of their stomach called the
gizzard. The gizzard is mostly muscle, and it has a rough inner surface
that grinds the food and breaks it down like mammals do with their
teeth when they chew.

Pirate Flags
Ships all through history have used flags to identify themselves.
send messages, and signal other ships. Pirate ships used flags for the
same reasons. Sometimes a pirate ship would fly a flag meant to trick
their victims into thinking they were a friendly ship and not a pirate.
By the time the unsuspecting ship got close enough to see they had
been tricked, it was too late. The most common pirate flag was called
the Jolly Roger. You have probably seen the skull and crossbones
symbol on pirate ships in movies, but the term Jolly Roger refers to a
pirate flag, not the specific symbol on it. Jolly Rogers had all kinds of
different symbols on them. Sometimes they didn't have symbols at all.
A plain black flag meant that no one would be hurt during an attack as
long as the victims did not resist. A plain red flag meant that those on
the ship being attacked would be shown no mercy.

Daydreaming
John loved to daydream. His parents and his teachers sometimes thought
John was idle or lazy, but that was not the case. John had a very rich inner world,
and he really enjoyed spending quality time there.
For example, one day, John lay stretched out on a towel on a hot, sandy beach.
He listened to the waves crashing against the shore. He watched the white sails
of boats for out along the horizon. A seagull squawked, and dived, and tried to
make off with his sandwich. John began to daydream that he was a seagull. He
imagined the swooping sensation in his stomach as he swooped and dove and
rode the air currents. A plane flew overhead, filing the air. for a few moments,
with its dull roar. John became a passenger in that plane, looking out of his
window and down over the town where he lived that ran along in a thin strip
next to the ocean.
Someone next to John cleared his throat. John turned to look at his fellow
passenger and found his teacher looking down at him.
"Daydreaming again, John?" his teacher asked.
The other kids laughed, but John just sighed and tried to concentrate on the
math problem in front of him. He would go back to visit his beach very soon.

Democracy
A democracy is a form of government. The word democracy comes from the
Greek words demos meaning The people" and Kratia meaning "power or rule."
In a democracy, the people being governed have a direct say in what the
government does. This is different from other forms of government in which all
the power is concentrated with just one person, such as in a monarchy or a
dictatorship.
Democracies come in two different forms. A direct democracy means each
individual citizen votes on every important decision. This is the kind of
democracy practiced in Athens, Greece. When a major issue needed to be
decided, every citizen would come to a central location and cast their vote. A
direct democracy works best with small populations. The more voters are
involved, the more difficult it becomes to cost, track, and count the votes of
every citizen. For this reason, the United States has what is called a
representative democracy. In this form of democracy, citizens vote for people
to represent them in the government. These elected representatives then vote
for or against the actual issues on behalf of the citizens they represent. Elected
representatives in the United States include the president, the members of
congress, and the members of the senate.
