Introducon: A non-inverng amplifier is a fundamental electronic circuit used to amplify an input
signal while maintaining its phase. It is a type of operaonal amplifier (op-amp) configuraon that
finds widespread applicaon in various electronic devices and systems, such as audio amplifiers,
instrumentaon, and signal processing equipment. This circuit is valued for its simplicity, versality,
and ability to provide signal amplificaon with minimal distoron.
Key Features:
1. Unity Gain at DC: One of the defining characteriscs of the non-inverng amplifier is that it has a
gain of one (unity) at DC (Direct Current) or low frequencies. This means that for low-frequency
signals, the output voltage follows the input voltage without any amplificaon, making it
suitable for preserving signal integrity.
2. High Input Impedance: Non-inverng amplifiers typically have a very high input impedance,
which means they draw minimal current from the source signal. This makes them ideal for
interfacing with various sensors and signal sources without loading them.
3. Adjustable Gain: The primary purpose of an amplifier is to amplify a signal. In a non-inverng
amplifier, the gain can be easily adjusted by selecng appropriate resistor values. The gain (A) of
a non-inverng amplifier is calculated using the following formula: A = 1 + (Rf / Rin), where Rf is
the feedback resistor and Rin is the input resistor.
Circuit Diagram: The non-inverng amplifier consists of an operaonal amplifier (op-amp) and two
resistors, as shown in the diagram below:
Vin ---- R1 ---- | (+) Vo | === | | | --- | | V- === | | GND
Working Principle: When an input voltage (Vin) is applied to the non-inverng amplifier, the op-amp
amplifies the signal and provides an output voltage (Vo). The relaonship between the input and
output voltages is determined by the resistors R1 and Rf, as menoned earlier. As the input voltage
increases, the output voltage also increases, and the phase of the output remains the same as that
of the input.
Applicaons:
1. Audio Amplifiers: Non-inverng amplifiers are commonly used in audio amplificaon circuits to
boost the strength of audio signals without altering their phase characteriscs.
2. Signal Condioning: They are ulized in instrumentaon and control systems to condion and
amplify weak signals from various sensors, like thermistors or photodiodes.
3. Voltage Followers: Non-inverng amplifiers can also funcon as voltage followers, which isolate
a source from the load and provide a high input impedance.
Conclusion: The non-inverng amplifier is a versale and praccal circuit configuraon that is
frequently employed in electronics for its simplicity, ability to provide adjustable gain, and

preservaon of signal phase. Whether used in audio systems, instrumentaon, or other applicaons,
it is an essenal tool for amplifying and processing a wide range of analog signals.
