Tutorial 11

Date: 16.11.2023 Duration: 45 mins Max. Marks: 10

Name: BITS ID: Tutorial Section:

Q1. An 02-series single-row deep-groove ball bearing with a 50 mm bore and a rotating
outer ring is subjected to the following piecewise continuous loading cycle. (L10 = 106 )

Time Fraction Speed (rpm) Fradial (kN) Faxial (kN) Load-application factor
0.2 1500 7 2 1.1
0.3 2500 8 3 1.2
0.5 2000 6 1 1.3

(a) Determine the steady radial load that will do as much damage as the given load
cycle.

(b) Estimate the life of the bearing in number of revolutions with 90% reliability.

Solution: For a 50 mm bore 02-series single-row deep-groove ball bearing, C0 = 19.6 kN 0.5 M
and C10 = 35.1 (kN). As the outer ring is rotating, V = 1.2. 0.5 M
0.5 M
Fradial (kN) Faxial (kN) Fa /C0 e Fa /(V Fr ) Fe (kN)
7 2 0.102 0.2938 0.2381 8.4
8 3 0.1531 0.3287 0.3125 9.6 3M
6 1 0.0510 0.2528 0.1389 7.2

The equivalent steady radial load that does the same amount of damage is
P 1/a
ni ti (af i Fei )a
Feq = P
0.5 M ni t i

For ball bearings, a = 3, therefore

Feq = 10.243 kN 3M

The life of the bearing in number of revolutions is

Leq = L10 × = 4.024 × 108 revolutions 2 M
