Q.1. (a) A plane wave 𝐸𝑜 𝑒 𝑖(𝑘𝑧−𝜔𝑡) (𝑖Ƹ + 𝑖 𝑗)Ƹ after passing through an optical element

emerges as 𝐸𝑜 𝑒 𝑖(𝑘𝑧−𝜔𝑡) (𝑖Ƹ − 𝑖𝑗).

Ƹ Identify the optical element with appropriate
reasons. [3]

(b) Calculate the minimum thickness of a calcite plate that would convert a plane
polarized light of wavelength 5890 Angstrom into circularly polarized light.
(Given μo = 1.732and μe = 1.414) [3]

Q.2. The polarized light beam is given by

𝑉
𝐸 = 40 cos 𝑘𝑧 − 𝜔𝑡 𝑖Ƹ + 40 sin 𝑘𝑧 − 𝜔𝑡 𝑗Ƹ
𝑚

Determine its state of polarization (with direction). If this beam passes normally
through a half-wave plate, then write an expression for emerging beam. [5]

Q.3. Show that Reflection Coefficient (R) and Transmission Coefficient (T) are equal
at normal incidence on the interface between two dielectrics (both non-magnetic) if
the ratio of their refractive index is 3 + 2 2 . [3]
Q. 4. A plane polarized electromagnetic wave travelling in a dielectric medium of
refractive index n is reflected at normal incidence from the surface of a conductor. If
the beam is polarized parallel to the interface, find the phase change undergone by
its electric field vector upon reflection if the refractive index of the conductor is
n = n(1 + ia), where a is a constant and I is imaginary number. [4]

Q.5. A plane electromagnetic wave from within a dielectric medium ( with Ꜫ = 4Ꜫo
and μ = μ0) is incident on its boundary with air, at z=0. The magnetic field in the
medium is

𝐸 = 𝐸𝑜 𝑐𝑜𝑠 𝜔𝑡 − 𝑘𝑥 − 3𝑘𝑧 𝑗Ƹ

where ω and k are positive constants.

Determine the following
(a) The reflected and transmitted electric field.
(b) The angle of reflection and refraction [12]
